From the Assistant Principals
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
It is with great pleasure that we announce that a new partnership between the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Glen Eira College has started. The Award is comprised of three levels (Gold, Silver and Bronze) and four sections (service, physical recreation, skill and adventurous journeys). Our first intake of students has met with Chris from the Duke of Edinburgh Award to set up their program.
Year 9 students have the opportunity to complete part of their Bronze Award within the Year 9 Making Connections Program in which we offer students activities such as community service, career exploration, health awareness, leadership activities and more. Students will also be expected to complete part of the Award within their own time.
As you may already know, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a leading youth development program, empowering all young Australians aged 14 to 25 to explore their full potential regardless of their location or circumstance. As a framework, the Award can play a vital role in providing opportunities for young people to develop essential life skills, complete adventurous activities, increase their employability and foster their creativity and innovation.
Cedric Chamontin will be the point of contact for students and parents, so please contact him through the General Office if you have any inquiries.
Interschool Sport
I’m sure you will join with me in congratulating the Year 8 Girls Softball, Year 7 Boys Baseball, and Senior Lawn Bowls teams who each won their respective Beachside Division competition. William Wong was the college’s sole champion in swimming. He took out the 50m Breaststroke and competed at the SMR Region finals at MSAC. During term 1, GEC fielded a wide variety of teams in Cricket, Baseball, Softball, Tennis, Volleyball and Lawn Bowls across all year levels and they represented the college with pride and distinction.
In term 2, students will compete in Netball, Football, Badminton, Soccer, Handball and Cross Country. For our senior students, this will be their last round of interschool competition for the year, so they will also compete in Basketball, Table Tennis, Hockey and Futsal.
Term 2 Sport Dates:

Assistant Principal
We are very proud of our students and this is reflected in the way they present themselves to the community. We appreciate your support in reminding students that the only jewellery to be visible is a watch and no more than two pairs of studs or sleepers (plain gold or silver). The only over garments to be worn at school are the Glen Eira College approved jacket or jumper.
The exam period begins on the 13th June for senior school students, starting with the GAT for students doing a Unit 3/4 subject. It is vital your child has a quiet place to study. Some study skills they may use include:
- Summarising notes taken in class and then summarising the notes
- Making concept maps or mind maps of the material they have covered
- Using post it notes to write key words or summaries and pin them around their bedroom
On the 22nd June we have a curriculum planning day for staff. Students will not be required at school.
Just a reminder that Progress reports can be found on the Xuno parent portal under 'Learning' - 'Progress Reports'. These reports come out every 6 weeks. Year 12 Progress Reports are made available every 3 weeks.
Assessment task grades are updated throughout the semester as subjects complete assessments. These are updated every 6 weeks also. These assessment tasks can be found on the Xuno portal under 'Learning' - 'Reports'. At the end of the semester these reports also include the Victorian Curriculum achievement levels.
If you do not have a login to the Xuno portal please contact the front office.
NAPLAN is running for Year 7 and 9 students on Tuesday 15th May, Wednesday 16th May and Thursday 17th May. Please encourage your child to do their best, while reassuring them they need not be unduly stressed. They will need a 2B lead pencil, eraser and calculator.
You play such an important role in the education of our children. We really value the support and guidance you provide to our students. The Glen Eira 5 articulates our vision and philosophy at the college. This is a commitment made by parents, students and teachers.
The following are the 5 commitments from our parents;
- Involvement and contributions to the broader education program
- Playing an active role in the child’s learning
- Supporting their children in achieving their learning goals
- Promoting the school values
- Maintaining open lines of communication with the school
To see the commitments from staff and students have a look in the school planner or check out our website.
