Monash Scholars Day
Five of our Year 12s spent a day of their holidays at Monash University’s city location for the 2018 Business Scholars Day. Boris, Ashley, Jacky, Mike and Nicholas enjoyed a day of workshops and talks by leading academics, and current and Monash alumni students. Lunch and a free Monash T-shirt were included.
A summary of the day has been written by Boris Pribil:
The day began like any day should
Wake up in the morning, feeling quite good
On the way to the city, the three of us went
To the new Monash campus, the three of us spent.
A day busy leaning, like every day should
Learning business and economics where alumnae were stood
The day was quite brisk, as we sat down for lunch
We started our meals, but were still full from brunch
We started to slow, digesting our food
Down to ask questions, we sat and we viewed.
A wonderful day, a good use of time
Learning, listening, for not even a dime.

Year 10
Work Experience
Year 10s need to finalise their placements now. If you are still without one, please come and see Ms McCaskie in the Senior School Office or email me on cmc@gec.vic.edu.au
Year 10s that are new this year to the school need to see me about completing their safe@work certificates.
There are many benefits to work experience.
- People are more likely to hire you if you’ve tried a job and still like it
- It shows you have initiative and can try new things
- You’ll have an opportunity to get a valuable reference from your ‘employer’
- Network, meet potential future employers, find out about their graduate positions or if they offer apprenticeships and traineeships.
- Do you know someone in an interesting job?
- If so, perhaps they will host you for a week.
- Ask around.
- Many of the best opportunities aren’t advertised. Try putting together a cover letter and CV then applying as you would for a job. You’re more likely to get a spot, plus you can chalk up some practice at applying for real jobs.
Careers Fast Track Program
Stage 3 of the program is on May 22nd to May 25th. A Careers Fast Track Counsellor comes out to have a 30 minute interview face to face. Appointment times will come out the week prior. Every student in Year 10 will take part in an interview. If there is any student who hasn’t completed their Career Quizzes, please come and see me in the Senior School Office.

Optimising STEM Industry-School Partnerships – From Australia’s Chief Scientist
Australia’s Chief Scientist, Dr Alan Finkel AO, has prepared a report on the role of STEM in schools, focusing on how STEM is and should be taught, and how it will relate to the jobs of the future.
“Employers with the vision to invest in the future have the insight to look for T-shaped individuals, those who have deep specialty skills (the vertical pole of the T) and broad enterprise skills (the horizontal bar of the T). Take away the horizontal bar and you are left with an ‘I’ – lots of discipline knowledge but lacking the collaborative skills to contribute that knowledge effectively. Take away the vertical pole and you are left with a dash – possibly smart but always rushing off for the answers instead of being able to contribute to the discussion.”
