LEARNING ENHANCEMENT

LEARNING ENHANCEMENT TEAM

Across Term 2 we have been working hard to ensure all students requiring adjustments to their learning programs are on track and starting to reach the goals set in their Terms 1 and 2 Program Support Group Meetings.

I have been unable to contact some parents and would invite parents to contact me if you feel an update is required. I always love these meetings as they are student led and allows the student to present their learning program and make sure that their support team, parents, teachers, learning support officers, wellbeing, homeroom teacher and house leader are all working in the same direction to ensure goals are being set and met. It takes a ‘Village’ to raise a child and our Program Support Meetings are a rewarding way to see how the school community is working together to meet the needs of our children.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Karen Russell for the work she has put into our Team over the last year. Karen was instrumental in the identification of many students who had fallen under the radar, who are now achieving successfully with increased support. Karen also contributed significantly to the development of the processes and practices of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data of students with disabilities and I thank her sincerely for this. I wish Karen all the best.

As I have previously presented in Newsletters, there is a change to the way students with disabilities are being funded in 2019. We are now required to record the type of disability area (cognitive, social emotional, physical and sensory) and the level of adjustments being made (supplementary, substantial, extensive) and then list this for the Government to allocate the funding.

The categories are much broader and the funding is retrospective. Meaning that the work we are doing this year with students will determine the funding allocation for students next year. Some students who have never been able to receive support through the SWD Program previously are now eligible, including students with dyslexia and ADHD.

The funding will still be allocated to a ‘pool’ where students are collectively supported in various ways depending on their individual need. This is guided by the Personal Learning Plans, Behaviour Support Plans or Teacher individual student support Plans. Programs such as Literacy Support and Essential Mathematics also provide students with significant support in their learning programs. As does the Flourish Program and after school tutoring. Our Wellbeing Team also provide essential support to all our students, but particularly students with Social Emotional Conditions such as anxiety or depression. These too all qualify for support under the new funding method.

There is more specific information linked below about the changes from the SWD Funding to NCCD. There have also been some changes to the school’s Privacy Policy under the direction from the Catholic Education Office Ballarat to reflect the funding changes and the recording of Data through the NCCD.

If you feel as though your child would benefit from additional support in the classroom, I encourage you to contact Mrs Melanie Saleta to discuss how we are supporting your child.
