Regional Touch Football Carnival 2017

On Friday 25th August, two Kildare teams competed in the Year 7 and 8 South West Region Touch Football Carnival at Jubilee Park. A mild day provided the perfect weather for the carnival and both teams played very well, featuring in the finals action. Games were of 20 minutes in duration and followed a touch-down, turn around format.

Year 7 and 8 Girls

The fourteen girl squad trained well leading into the carnival and were anticipating a successful day. Our first game against Murrumburrah High displayed the strength and depth of the KCC team and we finished with a 7-0 victory. Wade High School from Griffith proved to be a more formidable opponent. However, KCC prevailed, winning 3-1. Our third game was another tough one, with a strong Wagga High School outfit pushing us all the way to a 2-0 victory. Two easier games followed against Tumbarumba High (11-0) and Mt Austin High (8-0). Winning our pool, we ended up in the finals playing the second ranked team in pool B, Kooringal High. This proved to be a tough game but the KCC girls came out eventual winners, 3-1. In the final, we played Wagga High School again. This time it was a much tougher game with the KCC team winning 2-1.

As winners of the South-West region, the girls now head to Sydney in November to play in the All Schools Carnival. Congratulations to all players and a big thank you to Mrs Cooper who managed the team.

Year 7 and 8 Boys

A sprained ankle and the flu left the boys with 11 players to start the day however they performed admirably. Our first game was against Kooringal High who had a few handy players to watch out for. The boys defended well coming away with a 4-0 win. Second game was Tumbarumba High playing in their first regional tournament who had a go but were outclassed by Kildare with a 7 - 0 win to our boys. Third game was always going to be the hard one against a strong TRAC team however our defence came to the fore again with a 1-0 win. The last pool game for Kildare came against Wade High School and with the boys needing lunch and a rest the effort was down a bit and it showed with a 3 all draw. Still, with 3 wins and a draw from the pool games the boys finished top of their pool.

The Semi was Kildare V’s Wagga High and although there was confidence in the camp the boys didn’t play as well as expected and scraped through with a 3-2 win. Onto the final which saw our boys have a second game against TRAC. Both teams played with great structure and effort and at the end of regular time the scores were locked at 2 all. A drop off ensued with 5 a side , then 4 and then 3 until the deadlock was broken by the TRAC team with the Kildare boys going down in the most heartbreaking way. All in all it was a great day for all involved with the boys just missing out on a deserved place at the next level. There were good efforts from all players with some standouts including Sase with 6 x tries for the day and great performances from “Sweaty” Emery and “Harley Davidson” Voss. Big thanks to Riley and Hagred who were clearly the two best refs of the day.

A big thank you also to Riley Browning and Harry Luff who were our referees on the day.
