Year 11 Study Day #1

Year 11 have made a great start to the year and had their first Study Day at Oxford Falls last Friday. The demands of Year 11 can be overwhelming at first when students are expected to take on a new range of responsibilities and step up to the more rigorous demands of study.

The purpose of Study Days is to explore these new expectations and create healthy and balanced approaches to study and school work.  There were a range of sessions, including a session run by students about their personal approaches to study. The College Counsellor, Mr Russo, ran a session about the importance of inclusive community, awareness of others and looking after each other in the senior years. Students took home a Student Review Booklet as a self-reflection activity and this needs to be returned to homeroom teachers in Week 9.

In Week 8 all of Year 11 will go to Oxford Falls for a Reflection Day, focusing on call to leadership and spirituality.

Senior Resource Centre News

Medal Winning Readers set new Pius Record:   Each and every year, students in NSW from Years 3 to 9, attempt to read 20 books to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Of the million or so who participated in the 2018 Challenge, only 600 students completed the Challenge every year from Year 3 to Year 9.  Of these, 13 are St Pius X College students and they have been awarded the prestigious Premier’s Reading Challenge Medal. Collectively they break the 2016 record set by our current Year 12 group when seven students received this award.

The record breaking medalists include: Angelo Fernando, Austin Cleary, Callum Fitzgibbon, Geordan Coulitis, Jack Urriste, Joshua Wong, Liam Kinna, Manav Purohit, Matthew Kachel, Max Marshall, Nicholas Ward, Patrick Moore and Thomas Cummins.

Their ongoing participation in the Challenge shows the value they give reading in their lives because the 'challenge with the Challenge' for so many students is to keep on reading with so many activities competing for their reading time, particularly for Years 8 and 9.

Mr Damo, Assistant Principal Teaching and Learning, congratulated our Medal Winning Readers to a rousing applause at this week’s school assembly. Further applause follows to the boys’ parents and families and the many teachers who have supported this marathon reading journey.  Well done to all!

Mrs Karen Keighery - Senior Teacher Librarian
