SPX Red Cricket - Saturday 2 March
The 2019 Basketball Awards Presentation will be held on Tuesday 19 March in the school gym at Chatswood. This is a compulsory event for all players. The ceremony will start at 6:30pm.
Well done to all teams who played semis on Saturday. I was very impressed with everyone’s efforts and the great sportsmanship displayed on Saturday. It was inevitable we would win some and lose some. However, I felt the luck was not with us on Saturday with a number of heartbreaking loses. All teams can hold their heads high regardless of their result.
Game of the day: Our own 15Ds and 15Es had to battle it out for a spot in the Grand Final. All the boys gave it their best and it was a cracker of a game, but unfortunately there could only be one winner.

ISA Division 1 – Semi-final. 1st XI (10/110 L Chang 25, A Favelle 18) v St Patrick’s College Strathfield (3/114 T McLachlan 1/17) at Breen Oval
The 1st XI went to Strathfield to play the minor premiers St Patrick’s in a sudden death semi-final. Tom Colgan won the toss and batted first but early wickets were lost before Joe Colgan (19) and Adam Greenwood (13) consolidated the position. A middle order collapse against a dual spin attack followed. However, some more aggressive batting from Liam Chang (25) and Alec Favelle (18) led a recovery that was continued by Josh Hooper (12) and Tim McLachlan (6*) for the last wicket. A total of 110 was not imposing but it was felt that runs on the board would allow pressure to be placed on the opposition batsmen. The SPC opening batsmen saw off the 1st XI new ball but a run out by Alec Favelle and two excellent stumpings from Nick McLachlan off the bowling of Tom Colgan (1/32) and Tim McLachlan (1/17) saw the score at 3-45. Could the 1st XI pull off another miracle victory? It was not to be as the next SPC batsmen played attacking cricket and led their team home in the 33rd over.
The 1st XI showed a lot of character and fight throughout the season and can be very proud of their efforts. They were led by a fine captain in Tom Colgan. Seven of the players return next season with the experience of ISA cricket behind them, so there is much promise ahead for SPX Cricket.

Last Saturday 2 March, Week 10 of the competition, saw SPX Team 2 (pictured left) take on Briars 7 in their final competition game. All the boys played valiantly especially James Regan and Ben Marino who showed up injured and ill. Unfortunately, the team lost this fixture but did not end up on the bottom of the ladder in Division 8.
Next Saturday should see SPX Team 1 take on Knox 16 in the final of the Junior Summer Pennant at Thornleigh having gone through the season undefeated. We wish them all the best in the Division 7 final.

It was great to see the sunshine on Saturday morning and also pleasing that the temperatures stayed a little lower for the games. It has been great to watch Teams 26 – 31, our lowest division, battle it out each week to be top of the table - the improvement in the ability of these boys is great to watch. There was a very exciting match between Will Scaiff and John Badger-Rahme who are matched in ability, which resulted in a close score with Will just edging John out for the win. Ryan Fong played some excellent rallies and some super shots to defeat his opponent from Reddam 6-2. The early session (8am-10am) saw Pius secure 6 of the 8 wins!
Session 2 (10am to 12 pm) saw the tennis come alive as the weather blossomed. Special mention goes to the quality of tennis played by Anton Langreiter on Court 3 who showed commitment to an impressive singles match after a successful Doubles. SPX 6 & 7 drew applause from the crowd after their Doubles for the speed and power of the match between such competitive players. The memorable performance by the successful Lahoud brothers who fought Tom Garret and Thomas Wong with such determination makes this a Wimbledon class spectacle. The Pius boys were able to emerge victorious in 8 of the 8 games in this session and this was achieved through great skills and excellent sportsmanship!
Thank you to the senior boys - David Jelovic, Jamie Todd, Jarred Lam, Ben Casey, Richard Gauci, Tom Ryan and Michael Chan - who helped with umpiring and mentoring.
A reminder that the following boys are scheduled to mentor/umpire this weekend:: Nicholas McKenzie, Aidan Shearer-Hawkins, Cameron Fernandopulle, Alec Ramsbottom, Max Leo, Andrew McKinnon and Jayden Chan. Please ensure that you arrive at 7:45am ready to umpire the early games.
A REMINDER TO ALL BOYS THAT YOU MUST ARRIVE AT LEAST 15 MINUTES EARLY FOR YOUR GAMES TO ENSURE THAT YOU HAVE A GOOD WARM-UP and HAVE TIME TO FILL OUT THE SCORECARD and DON’T FORGET YOUR CAPS!!
