Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday, sometimes called Pancake Tuesday, is the day before Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of Lent.  Traditionally, many Christians would eat pancakes on this day as they were not allowed to eat food that contained lots of fat, butter and eggs during Lent.  Families wanted to use up these foods before Ash Wednesday as it is a time of fasting.

At our school, we will be having a COVID safe pancake day celebration.  Each child will be given a pancake with a variety of toppings to choose from including lemon, sugar and jam. These will be given to the students in their class groups.  We apologise for the restrictions which don’t allow whole family’s to celebrate together but we look forward to celebrating other events later in the year.

Ash Wednesday

The journey to Easter starts on Ash Wednesday.  Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.  On Ash Wednesday, traditionally ashes are traced in the form of a cross on peoples forehead.  The ashes are a reminder to be sorry for the times when we made the wrong choice which leads away from God.  Ash Wednesday is a reminder of the need to keep the light of goodness alive in our lives.  Ash Wednesday reminds us that God loves us.  He forgives us when we are sorry for our sins.

At St. Brigid’s we will be having a COVID safe Ash Wednesday liturgy for all classes. Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions parents are unable to attend this, this year.

Lent

Lent, is a forty-day period of preparation for Easter.  Lent is a time in the Christian calendar where Catholics are encouraged to spend longer in prayer, are encouraged to fast as a sign of penance often avoiding eating certain foods or doing extra acts, as a way of making up for their sins.

Little acts of giving up something we like, but don't need like lollies or sweets are a way of doing penance. Or it may be trying to be more caring and patient or more obedient and unselfish with others.

Lent is an important time of preparing our hearts, asking for forgiveness and becoming closer to God ready for the celebration of the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

At St. Brigid’s during Lent we will be learning about vulnerable communities around the world, raising awareness and funds for Project Compassion.

Project Compassion 2022

The theme of Project Compassion 2022 is ‘For All Future Generations’ and reminds us that the good that we do today will extend and impact the lives of generations to come.  It invites us to make the world a better place by working together now and finding long-term solutions to global issues.  We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through your prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion.

In our school we will be raising awareness about Project Compassion in Heart Learning led by our Year 6 leaders.  Each student will also be given a Project Compassion box to take home to raise funds for this charity.  We thank you for continuing to support this charity this term by buying iceblocks each Friday.

Yours in Love, Peace and Learning
