Agriculture & Horticulture

 VCE Units 1 & 2

The VCE Agriculture & Horticulture Units 1 and 2 class were very lucky to have Neha from GMLLEN arrange for dairy farmer, Amabelle Grinter and orchardist, Andrew Plunkett, speak about their industries, ever-changing career opportunities and how various drivers of change impact in both positive and challenging ways. They learned, among other things, about innovations that have made fruit picking safer and easier and how precision spray irrigation equipment can save money and make the best use of available water.

Hunter from Ripe Robotics also visited, bringing some equipment to demonstrate how his inventions can pick fruit from a tree. Hunter was very inspiring, in that, he kept persisting in his goal to develop a successful fruit-picking robot, despite the failures of various prototypes along the way and having very little funds behind him. Students were able to use the fruit grabbing arm, which is controlled by compressed air.

Lorraine Gordon, one of our country's top academics, from Southern Cross University at Lismore, NSW also spoke to the class on Teams about the changing nature of careers in agriculture. The biggest message from both, was the high demand for careers in the Agriculture & Horticulture industries at all levels.
