Woodwork - Term 1
In Woodwork this term, we have been learning about safety, how to use tools and how to move around the space safely.
We have been designing a glasses stand to hold sunglasses/reading glasses, so they should not be anywhere else, and you know where they are. I have been working on an animal theme design (a goat) and the stages we have been working through so far are:
- Drafting
- Tracing on wood
- Cutting it out
- Filing
- Sanding
It has been a great experience participating in woodwork and trying something new. Grace Inglis, St Elizabeth
So far in Design and Materials, we’ve learnt how to move safely in the workshop, how to use tools and what they are used for and learning most of the tool names. We are now learning how to make a glasses stand. I am making a Koala. In the process of making our project, we first traced out our design/sketch onto the wood, with transfer paper. Next, we cut out our design with a coping saw and then used different types of files, plus sandpaper to smooth out the edges. I can’t wait to see how these will turn out. Angelina White, St Elizabeth
This term in Design and Materials, the Year 7 students were making glasses racks out of wood. They learned how to cut the timber and smooth off the edges with files and sandpaper. They increased their woodworking skills and expanded their creative limits. They also learned how to use a variety of different tools and what each tool is called.
Harveen Mann, St Nea
In Design and Materials, we have learned how to use different types of saws and files to create a glasses holder. We have, of course, gone over safety rules in the workshop and what all sorts of tools do. We have learned different strategies and techniques to use tools and so much more. Design and Materials is so fun and I can’t wait to do more work. Jasmine Hardwick, St Elizabeth
