Chinese New Year Celebrations

Year 10 Chinese

MGC students who learn Chinese not only get to become linguistically immersed in Chinese communities, but also culturally.

On the 1st of February we celebrated Chinese New Year (春节 chun jie), and 14 days later the Lantern Festival (元宵节 yuan xiao jie).

The Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival celebrations highlight the importance of family and being reunited with loved ones. Much like Christmas in Australia, it is a time for everyone to cease work and school and come together to celebrate the start of a new year and wish each other prosperity for the year ahead.

In class for the weeks leading up to the New Year and Lantern Festival, we learnt about the cultural significance of these days, and were rewarded for our hard work on the Lantern Festival with delicious fortune cupcakes (red velvet with cream cheese icing!) and Year of the Tiger cookies! The cupcakes were decorated with the character 福 fu which means fortune. And these 福 fu cupcakes definitely gave us good fortune as they were delicious and helped us learn more about Chinese culture!

Welcome back to a new year in the MGC International Student Program!  This year we welcomed 4 new international students in Year7, Year 10 and Year 11!  Please make sure you introduce yourselves to them if you see any unfamiliar faces in your class, as their priority is to make new friends to teach them about our crazy Australian culture and language!

An exciting news to share is about the celebration of Lunar New Year. Being away from home during New Year is certainly not easy. All the internationals haven’t gone back to hometown for two years due to the pandemic. To help the girls get over being homesick, we have organized red pockets with cookies for the girls to celebrate the New Year.

This year, we are glad to co-work with our Diversity Team to engage new students in MGC and to create a more comfortable and inclusive environment for our international students. We have some volunteered students will take part in the buddy program and help our newer to integrated into our school community.  All buddies have received a rose as a thank you gift on 14th February, the 1st day of Lunar new year and

Wishing you all luck in the year of the Tiger!
