Round the classes

Reception class : Katie

In literacy we have been very busy learning to identify our letter sounds. We are doing so well that we have even been able to read some sentences.

In maths we are starting to learn the basics of number and this week we are learning all about the number 5.

As part of HASS we have been learning about our families and how everyone in our class has slightly different families. As part of our work with the Kimochis we have been meeting Cloud and Lovey Dove and discovering that there are a lot of people in our class who experience similar feelings to these characters.

We are very excited to be starting work on our gardening this week too.

Year 1/2 classes : Sam and Kelly

This fortnight we have been focusing on phonemic awareness and correct letter/number formation. The students are very proud of their progress in this area.

In Maths, we have been looking at subitising and place value, and have been exploring a range of mathematical vocabulary to explain our thinking. It's great to see the students working together to share their ideas and strategies.

We have been creating our very own class 'Learning Pit' in wellbeing lessons. In HASS, our focus is on our local community. We are sharing different roles people contribute to our local community and why we are an 'important piece of the puzzle'.

Year 3/4 class: Stephen and Henry

In our class we are learning about the Adelaide tram system for history. We have learnt that throughout time, there have been lots of different types of trams.  Our task this week was to design a tram of our own.  Here are some examples.

Year 3/4 class: Alex

During week 5 and 6 students have begun their Geography unit exploring the similarities and differences in the way place and location are described and the natural and human characteristics between places in Australia and Australia’s neighbouring countries. Students have continued building on their narrative writing by focusing on tightening the tension in their stories, building the suspense for the reader.

In Maths we have been finishing off our place value unit and students are ready to begin reflecting on their learning toward their goals.

Students have enjoyed practising mindfulness through breathing exercises such as ‘Box Breathing’, ‘Five- Finger Breathing’ and ‘Flower and Candle Breathing’. They have also been participating in mindfulness brain breaks such as ‘The storm’ (see below) in which they have been identifying how it feels to escalate their energy to increase alertness and de-escalate it to calm down along with the actions in the storm.

Year 5/6 class: Sallie

We have decided to call ourselves The Fabulous Fraction Faction as we embark on a unit of work on …you guessed it, fractions. We are honing our skills in maths to think quickly and efficiently and practise sharing our strategies and ideas.

For English we are continuing to focus our efforts on short story writing and are enjoying a short story by  Henry Lawson highlighting humour in short stories.

Monica (our choir instructor) seemed impressed with our efforts and we are looking forward to our excursion to Arbury Park.

Gardening - Jo

With the Sustainability Fair only weeks away we are focusing on learning what we can do to improve the sustainability of our world and local environment.

The 3/4 students did a sustainability audit of the school, collected the food scraps and harvested our potato crop.

Indonesian - Ibu Susan

In Indonesian we have been super busy using the names for face parts and also describing how people look. The younger classes have been focussing on besar ( big) and kecil (small). We have been completing matching, sorting, labelling and translation activities.

Science - Henry

In Science, the Junior Primary classes have been looking at different types of weather, weather patterns and the symbols that we use to read and understand weather forecasts. Students have been practising drawing symbols, writing forecasts for the local area, as well as looking at the types of weather that Australia experiences in each season. The Year 3 to 6 classes have been exploring space, with a particular focus on our sun (scientifically known as Sol), and the diverse Indigenous Australian understandings of the night sky.

P/E - Henry

In PE we have been practising the fundamental sporting movements of throwing and catching. The younger years have been practising chest passes with larger balls, while the older kids have been working on more advanced single handed and non-dominant hand throwing and catching.
