Concept Science
The Concept program at Thornbury High School aims to extend the learning of some of our high achieving students through a variety of avenues, all focusing on the the learner, and characteristics of what makes a lifelong learner. Some of the characteristics that underpin the program include; mindfulness, persistence, flexible and deliberate thinking, empathy, inquiry and curiosity, independence, interdependence and humor.
Conscious that the program aims to not only focus on academia, Concept in Science has also recently been actively integrating mindfulness, metacognition, humor and curiosity in the classroom. Students have been taking five minutes out of their lessons to calm themselves down with mindful meditation practices designed to get them ready for their learning.
The questions that the students have been asking are showing their freedom to inquire, be curious and deliberately think and expand on their newly acquired knowledge. For example, a recent question by one of our Year 7 students was “if at absolute zero, particles are basically motionless, if something was to get to absolute zero, how could anything get out of it seeing as, at that temperature, everything is motionless?”.
