2013 STATE SCHOOLS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The overcast cold October day made for stark contrast to the hot summer weather of previous years but this did nothing to dampen the excitement of McKinnon representatives at the 2013 State Schools Athletics Championships.
Twenty-three McKinnon students are to be congratulated on qualifying for the State level competition in events including the 800m, 1500, shot put, discuss, long jump and 100m relay.
Bella Lignos began the day with a great run in the U15 Girls 800m race finishing a close 3rd after leading during the 2nd lap. Joseph Inglis finished 5th in the 12-13 years long jump whilst Matthew Wilkens qualified for the shot put and discuss but was unfortunately ill on the day. In the afternoon Lilli Soprano finished 10th in the 12-13 Girls 1500m, Sophie Highnam finished 6th in the U15 1500 with Bella close on her tail in 7th. Max Meuleman placed 6th in the U14 Boys 1500m race achieving a personal best time while Nicholas Parkinson also placed 6th in his 17 Boys 1500m event.
The relays provided an exciting end to the day with a flurry of close finishes. Our 12-13 Boys Relay team thrilled onlookers with what became the highlight of the day winning the 4 x 100m race and smashing the state record by a full second. Congratulations to Joseph Inglis, Eli Tahana, Aiden Farrell and Jesse Scholz on a magnificent run. Our U15 Girls Relay team made up of Charlotte Soteriou, Bailey Chow, Sian O'Leary and Caitlin Arneil placed 5th whilst Thomas Collier, Isaiah Tahana, Matej Cubic and Harry Amner finished a close 4th in the 16 Boys. Elena Wedgwood, Mackenzie King, Megan Maya and Sejin Gunaridis ran a fantastic race to pick up the last McKinnon medal for the day placing second in a tightly contested 18-20 years event.
Once again congratulations to every athlete who participated from our school house athletics through to the district, regional and state events. Go Mckinnon!

SENIOR BOYS CRICKET
On Tuesday 15 October the Senior Boys Cricket side headed into the State Finals at Silcock Reserve, Croydon.
In the Semi Final the boys were in total control for the whole match, limiting Vermont SC to 7/111 off 20 overs and easily making the runs with two overs to spare.
In the Final against Bendigo, we once again bowled first and limited them to 120, and going on our performance in the Semi a State Championship was within striking distance.
Our top order unfortunately had no luck early losing the top four for single figures, and putting too much pressure on the lower order. We fell short in the run chase, taking home State Runners-Up medals from our year long campaign.
Well done to all the boys who were involved throughout the year.

INTERMEDIATE GIRLS CRICKET
On a wet day at Caulfield Park the Intermediate Girls Cricket team took on MacRobertson Girls High School last Tuesday. McKinnon lost the toss and was sent in making a huge score of 143 runs. Top scores (all retired) were Melina Ayres, Caitlin Arneil and Cassie Semple. McKinnon restricted MacRobertson to 68 runs with Cassie Semple taking two wickets.
On Tuesday 29 October we played Lakeside Luthern College at McKinnon Reserve. Lakeside batted first and made 55 in 20 overs. Yulissa Huo and Caitlin Arneil both took 3 wickets. McKinnon made the required target in 6 overs with Melina Aryes top scoring 25.

INTERMEDIATE BOYS CRICKET SMR SEMI FINAL
The boys travelled to Caulfield Park to play against Minaret College and after winning the toss in damp conditions we decided to bat, posting a very competitive total of 7/142 in our 20 overs. Harry King scored 40 not out, Ross Sandler scored 29 and Joel Ludik scored 24.
When it was our turn to field things didnât go our way with edges flying to the boundary. Despite their unorthodox technique, once the boys from Minaret got their eye in they were hard to contain and actually reached our target quite comfortably. Minaret scored 6/143 off 18.4 overs, James Robertshaw 2/24 and Harry King 2/25.

INTER BOYS BASKETBALL
On Friday 25 October the Inter Boys Basketball team travelled to Dandenong to take part in the Southern Metro Regional Finals. McKinnon played three games for the day and lost each in very even hard fought contests. In each match the score was level with two minutes to go yet we couldn't bring it home losing to Frankston by seven, Hallam by five and finally overall winner Alkira by six points.
