House Aquatics Carnival

Ash Wednesday

Our college observed Ash Wednesday with a morning liturgy in each house group.  We heard the story about the women caught in adultery and the love, compassion and forgiveness of Jesus when he asked those condemning her: “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”  Every human being makes mistakes and does wrong.  God calls us to acknowledge our wrongdoings, to be sorry for them and to seek to make up for them. Forgiveness is at the heart of the Gospel and Ash Wednesday calls us to forgive ourselves and others and to find a change of heart so we don’t continue to do the wrong thing in the future.

Students and staff received the ashes on the foreheads with the words: “Be the person God calls you to be”. We are all called to be people that put the value of love ahead of anything else, people that are free from unhealthy attachments to wealth and possessions, that share what they have with others, people who are humble and grateful, and who show compassion and solidarity for all human beings. These Gospel values contain enduring truths about the dignity of the human person and the transformative power these values have for those who live by these truths.

The occasion concluded with this prayer:

“Merciful God, tenderly guide us through this Lenten season.

May the ashes that we wear today strengthen us to live with the risen Christ.

Amen”

This week the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice.

We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through your prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion. Each Homeroom has a Project Compassion box.

Your donation will make a real difference to others in the world.
