Art room news -  Term 2 2021

Clay, Clay, Clay

The new term has begun with much excitement over what is already proving to be a fun, but challenging experience - CLAY. Even though clay is initially a play based art experience, many techniques and processes are learned through trial and error. Rolling clay into smooth, round spheres, flattening clay into even, consistent  slab and joining details properly are all skills that will be mastered (over time) in the clay classroom this term. Problem solving is a huge part of the ceramic experience and every encounter, whether it be successful or not, mounts up to practice and perfecting our ceramic hand building skills. We are already learning and using the correct terminology in every year level and we can identify some of the key techniques with the help of a sing-song chant or two. ”Score and Slip, Makes clay stick!”

ANZAC Poppy Garden

Watch as our ANZAC Poppy Garden grows......Over the next few weeks, Grade 3 through to 6 will be making clay poppies to place in the garden adjoining the Learning Centre and Administration Building. Our first firing of the poppies is happening as I write this newsletter, so next week we shall be painting our creations with a special outdoor acrylic. Our hope is that this garden will remain a part of Mullum’s landscape in honour and in memory of those that fought for our country.

New Smocks!

It has been delightful to watch the younger students wrangle our new Art Smocks; learning how to put them on - the right way around - turn sleeves inside out and hang them on hangers after class. Who would have known that Art lessons could teach us so much! The thing I have enjoyed the most is when they turn to one another and ask for help to do their smock up at the back and then exclaim, “I can put on my smock!” They are so proud - and so am I, of this perfect learning opportunity and achievement. Well done kiddos!
