Sports Report

Teams in action at the Darebin Division Volleyball tournament

There has been plenty going on in the last couple of weeks of term one as the first part of our inter-school sports program wraps up, with volleyball, tennis and swimming teams all giving it their best.

Volleyball

9/10 Girls A team:

We started off the day with some practice to settle into our new teams. At about 10:00 all the schools had arrived and so commenced the games. We played surprisingly well for the first game together, but the opponent was stronger, and we lost in straight sets. Our second game was a success although our communication was not as good as the first round. We won the 2nd and 3rd games but when it got to the 4th game, we couldn’t keep up the winning streak. We lost but put up a good fight. In the 5th game, it was the closest, the first set was 25-27 we won, the second was 22-25 we lost and in the final set we sadly lost 12-15. We played well.

9/10 Girls B and C Team:

Both teams played in the same pool, so we were all excited to see how we would go against the same opponents. Both teams worked together quite well, given we had only found out our teams an hour before. After having warmed up from playing a few matches, it was time to play against each other! After a tough game, The C team used their great communication and encouragement to come out on top and beat the B team in straight sets! At the end of the day, I think both teams agreed that we had all improved a lot compared to a few hours ago, even with our bruised and swollen hands.

Thanks to Chloe for coaching and Ms. Smith and Ms. Roberts for helping out on the day!

Year 8 Volleyball

Well done to all our Year 8 Volleyball teams who played in the Darebin Division Competition. They showed great improvement throughout the day with some wins in the afternoon. Thank you to our student coach Iris Bentley who coached the girls in the lead up and on the day and to Erin Gallagher and Tarah Brown who worked with the boys teams.

Year 7 Volleyball

Volleyball is a new sport for most of our year 7 students and it has been great to see how many of them have been keen to give it a go. Everyone has been working hard at after school training, with the help of student coaches from the volleyball development program. The teams have been working towards competing in the Darebin division tournament with nearby schools, Thornbury, Reservoir, Lalor and Preston.

Well done to our five teams for your great effort throughout the tournaments in some close matches. Thanks to our student coaches, Alica and Amelia, Harry, Aaron, Connor and Fred and to Ms Roberts and Ms Gollan for supervising the students on the day.

On Wednesday the 24th of March, a bus load of Northcote High students headed to Watermarc pool for the regional swimming competition. Everybody swam well and had a great time. We had a number of students place and several are going to the State competition.

Year 7

Congratulations to our Year 7 Tennis teams who recently competed in their Divisional Competitions. In the boys’ section we had 3 teams competing.  Northcote Gold finished the day as outright winners after some competitive matches throughout the day.  In the girls section our girls also finished the day on top and overall winners.  Both teams now move through to the regionals which are to be played at Booroondara Tennis Club on April 30.  All students should be commended on their teamwork and were great sports throughout their tournaments.

Year 8

Well done to our Year 8 Boys Division tennis teams. With closely contested matches throughout the day, it came down to the wire in a countback and a quick check on the SSV ruling to eventually have our boys come runner up.  All were in good spirits on the way home, so clearly the boys weren’t too disappointed with the outcome.

In the girls comp they had some competitive matches, but Thornbury were too strong on the day and became overall winners.

Thanks to Ms Gollan for her support and selection of all of our tennis teams and big thank you to David Sandberg for helping with selections of the year 8 team, and helping out on competition day along with James Wickett.

Coming up : Senior Regionals

On Monday 29 March, our Senior Girls Volleyball Team and Senior Boys Tennis will be playing in Regional Finals.  We wish them well and will have a full report in the first newsletter next term.

That’s a wrap for Term 1 Sports 2021.  It has been fantastic to have sport happening again. We would like to thank all students, families and our wonderful staff and student coaches for their support throughout the term.
