Shared Stories

This year for the first time St Mary’s will be part of the Shared Stories Project.   What is the Shared Stories Project?

Shared Stories is an annual anthology of creative works by primary and secondary students from Catholic schools across Victoria.

The anthology commenced in 2006 with funding from the Felton Bequest. The concept was imagined in response to the Cronulla riots in Sydney, which challenged educators to explore positive and affirming ways of sharing experiences and ideas across cultural and social groups throughout Victoria.

In its 15th year, the anthology forms part of the permanent collection of the State Library of Victoria. Every year there is a different theme and this year the theme is “Chasing Happiness”.

All students at St Mary’s from Foundation to Year 6 will be involved in expressing their feelings and ideas around “Chasing Happiness” through writing or the visual arts. Teachers will plan for this and students will complete their written or visual arts pieces in class. Some of these pieces of work will be selected  for publication in the final book along with all the other students from Catholic schools all over Victoria who are in the project. St Mary’s will have six pages of the book to fill with our entries.

Students selected for this will be part of a special launch at the end of the year. Parents will be notified if their child is selected and they will be invited to the launch. Last year the launch was conducted virtually because of COVID restrictions but hopefully this year the launch might be live. If you would like to find out more about Shared Stories you might like to watch last year’s launch by clicking onto the link below.

We are all very excited about being part of the Shared Stories Project and we look forward to the wonderful work the students will do around this theme of “Chasing Happiness”. I would like to leave you with this quote which I thought was very inspiring.

"How luxurious it is to have a voice. And even in these times of ‘no mask, no entry,’ what freedoms we have in being able to share our words; share our stories."

VISUAL ART & ITALIAN NEWS    (Caroline Egan & Carmel Vozzo)

During this week, some of our Italian language and Visual Art lessons are run in shared learning spaces. Students are encouraged to share their rich language learnings and incorporate it into a Visual Art response. This week, some of our students have focused their studies around the features and architecture of Venice, as well as their understandings of the significance of piazzas as shared community areas in Italian culture.

The students are engaged and responding enthusiastically to sharing their experiences of Italian culture, language and Visual Art. Bravo !!

Soccer Lightning Premiership

On Friday the 23rd of April, was the Holt Soccer Lightning Premiership. Yr 5 and 6 participated in this event as two teams, girls team and a boys team. We played four games each and both teams made it to the Semi Finals. We were very proud of our efforts. Some highlights were playing as a team, cheering on our team mates and congratulating the other schools and watching everyone’s skills improve as the day went on. There were some very impressive passages of play that ended with a goal and some amazing defence work by both teams.

We would like to thank Mrs Thompson for organising the teams and the teachers and parents who supported us on the sidelines! We all had lots of fun and are looking forward to participating in more interschool sports.
