DEPUTY PRINCIPAL STUDENTS

UNIFORM

Students are required to wear the winter uniform in Terms 2 and 3. The college blazer must be worn as the outer garment to and from school and to morning homeroom.

We continue to follow the School Operations Guide, and students will continue to be permitted to wear their PE uniform for the entire day on days when they have a practical PE class. Please be aware that these guidelines are reviewed regularly to ensure they reflect current public health advice.

A reminder in relation to earrings that students are permitted to wear small plain spherical gold/silver studs or sleepers for pierced ears. Only one small sleeper or stud is permitted in each lower ear lobe. No plastic, gemstones (coloured or clear), pearl, hoop, huggie or disc earrings. Clear plastic plugs or Band-Aid coverings are not acceptable. Students are also not permitted to wear rings, or have coloured nail polish/nail extensions.

We thank you for your support in keeping our school uniform one of our most distinctive and proud symbols. If you have any queries in relation to the uniform policy, please refer to the Uniform and Guidelines which is attached and available on the college website.

Please contact the Uniform Shop should you require any garments via email.

STAFF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAY - RESTORATIVE PRACTICES

On Friday March 5 the college staff participated in a professional learning day on Restorative Practices with Simon Dewar from Real Schools. Simon has vast experience in working within and alongside schools to assist them to empower cultural change and energise entire school communities. St Joseph’s College already has Restorative Practices embedded in our school culture, policies and processes, and the purpose of the day was to reconnect the college staff through the principles of thinking and working restoratively.

The key outcomes of the day for staff were:

  • To position Restorative Practices as a fundamental underpinning of the school’s focus on School Culture.
  • To develop a deep understanding about human behaviour and the rules through which we learn to improve behaviour.
  • To upskill teachers in Restorative Practices, such that they can contribute to whole-school approaches and commitments.
  • To provide practical tools, models and frames through which to build more consistent responses to student behaviour and promote higher engagement levels.
  • To continue building on the strong moral purpose, and ensure we are explicit on the evidence to measure and celebrate our impact.
  • To connect teacher professional learning around the need to collectively work towards a strong relational culture, further supporting the current work of the college.
  • To connect directly with the principles of working restoratively and actively on relationships and classroom climate in line with St. Joseph’s focus on improving student learning and engagement.
  • To reinforce pedagogical practices which align with explicit learning intentions to improve student learning outcomes and targeted stakeholder perceptions.
  • To promote the ongoing sharing of strong teacher practice.
  • To motivate the thinking of educators as to the possibilities for working consistently through an advanced restorative model in the future as a means for a more proactive, rather than reactive whole school approach.

Achieving these outcomes will ultimately support our students' wellbeing and academic achievement at the college.

The college has entered into a partnership with Simon and Real Schools, where Simon will return to the college on numerous occasions to work with our staff and also our students. Parents will also be given the opportunity later in the year to hear from Simon about restorative practices and strategies that can used at home to support your children.
