Leadership Conference

Last week I attended the Flinders Park Portfolio Leaders Conference. Over 100 sites attended the conference from the Holdfast, Le Fevre and West Torrens Partnerships. The focus was on ‘Future Ready Education’ and how we can develop students that are agile and resilient to manage the changing future.

The first keynote speaker was Bernard Salt who focused on ‘Managing Generational Change’ and ‘Preparing for Jobs of the Future’. Salt’s key messages were that future citizens will need high level social skills and the ‘Five C’s’ (collaboration, critical thinking, communication, curiosity and creativity) to be successful in an ever changing global community where work ethic will not be enough.

Salt believe's the following areas are where jobs will be in the future:

Technocrats: engineers and entrepreneurship

Specialist Professional: medical, educational and legal

Doers: trades-persons and waiters

Cares: aged care and social workers

Creativities: performing arts and wellbeing

The second keynote was Lee Crockett who presented on ‘Future Focussed Learning’. Crockett’s focus was around student, parents and teachers relationship with the future. Key learning for me included:

Future Focussed Teaching

Give students problems that matter, to them

Give students access to the tools (Soft skills and technology)

Find the courage to stand aside (give students the control- enable failure)

Crockett's Considerations for Leadership

Invest in your people, your only non-depreciating assets

Don't change the furniture or tech, change the pedagogy

Modify environment and tech only as need arises based on the purposeful outcomes and values metrics

Have a commonly understood vision with clear KPIs

Establish a solutions-focussed culture that embraces failure as an essential and valuable formative outcome

  • Allocate time and resources for discovery (play, experimentation)

Learning from the conference reaffirms where LNPS is heading with student learning. Our focus on 'Approaches to Learning' through goal setting and feedback reflects the key messages from the conference.

Term 2 Education Forum

On Wednesday 7th June at 7pm the Education Committee will be hosting the first Education Forum for 2017.  We will be screening Most Likely to Succeed

Most Likely To Succeed (MLTS) is an American education documentary. MLTS is one of the best films ever done on the topic of school — both its past and its future. The film inspires its audiences with a sense of purpose and possibility, and is bringing school communities together in re-imagining what our students and teachers are capable of doing. After seeing this film, you’ll never look at school the same way again.

The following clip from MLTS provides an understanding of the 'Essential Skills' that our students will need into the future to be successful.

Please look out for further information in the future regarding this exciting screening. If you have any questions or would like further information please contact tyson.grinham428@schools.sa.edu.au
