I don't know if this is true or not - but I really hope it is:

Pirates didn’t wear patches because they lost or injured an eye.

They were constantly going below deck to do this or that.

The lower deck was pitch black -

Oil lamps were expensive and too much of a bother.

So they kept one eye covered and acclimated to the darkness.

They removed the patch when they went below deck, and could see just fine with that eye.

The patched eye stayed adapted to the darkness, and the other stayed adapted to the glaring upper deck.

They switched the patched eye the next day, and so on.
