Naidoc Week 2022

Get up, Stand up, Show up

As NAIDOC week fell during the second week of the school holidays, we have taken the opportunity to extend the celebrations and observe it at SKiPPS during this week, the first of term 3.

Key actions in our school Reconciliation Action Plan are to 'teach about reconciliation', 'Welcome to Country', 'Build Relationships with Community' & 'Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in curriculum planning'.

Across the school this week, classes have been engaging with these actions.

In Art classes, students have been learning about First Nations artist Albert Namatjira, his career and work and then drawing and decorating leaves inspired by his art and his story. These leaves will come together to create a whole-school artwork - a tree to celebrate his legacy.

In Year 1/2 students have been reading three brilliant books from our classroom libraries exploring First nations culture and identity; 'Dry to Dry', 'Walking in Gagudju Country' and 'Looking after Country with Fire'. They have done a range of activities this week based on the ideas and wonderings from their reading.

In Year 3/4 students wrote their own haiku poems based on the themes of friendship, reconciliation and forgiveness.

In Year 5/6 students have embarked on research projects about significant people and events in Aboriginal activism, inspired by the 2022 NAIDOC week theme of 'get Up, Stand Up, Show Up'.

We had made plans to finish our NAIDOC Week celebrations this Friday with a visit to the school from Boon Wurrung elder N'arwee't Carolyn Briggs to speak at assembly, perform a Welcome to Country and then to work with the Foundation children on a storytelling activity. Sadly, she is currently isolating due to Covid so we will look to rearrange this visit for later in the term.
