Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge

What do words written by JK Rowling, Dav Pilkey, David Walliams, Andy Griffiths, Anh Do, Aaron Blabey, Alison Lester, Lynley Dodd and Dr Seuss have in common?

They were muttered, dramatized, unravelled and celebrated in the minds of Kalinda students during this year’s Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge. Some of the more popular titles at Kalinda included stories from a range of series such a Harry Potter, Dog Man, Hot Dog, Weirdo, Pig the Pug, Hairy Maclary and the 13th Storey Treehouse. Stories by Allison Lester, David Walliams and Dr Seuss were also very popular this year. Over 113,00 students across the state completed the challenge, reading over 4.3 million books!

We congratulate the 97 Kalinda students who read either 30 books (F-2) or 15 books (3-6) primarily from the Challenge Booklist. Their Certificates of Achievement have been presented via their classroom teachers.

A message from Heidi and Sinèad, our Kalinda Sustainability Leaders for 2019:

These results show a huge effort by all students involved. A big thank you to all the parents and families for getting on board and supporting this change at Kalinda. We understand it can be quite tricky to change old habits, but we believe this is such an important step our school needs to take to help our environment.

I know I have seen a huge difference in how I view what our family buys at the shops and try to look for items that already has nude food- just like fruit and vegetables!

We would like to encourage all students, families and staff to continue buying and bringing nude food to school each day even though we have finished our Nude Food Month. We can see lots of changes already but know we need to keep reducing our rubbish more and change our ways to making more sustainable choices.

SPORT NEWS

Grade 3/4 Cricket Blast School Cup

A group of Grade 3/4 students participated in the Cricket Blast School Cup competition on Thursday the 24th of October.

The day began with students attending a cricket skills session where they participated in a range of activities while practising basic cricket skills. After this students had the chance to make their own mango or strawberry smoothie on the smoothie bikes.

Then it was game time, each team played 3 cricket games against students from other schools. Excellent sportsmanship was shown on the day, with many students stepping up, in which they provided their team with lots of direction and support.

All our teams won a number of games on the day, however this day wasn’t all about winning, it was about having fun and giving cricket a go.

Thank-you to Warranwood Cricket Club, who assisted us on the day with coaching particular teams. Also thank-you to the parents who lent a helping hand and showed their support on the day.

State Athletics Championships

Congratulations to Jemma W who participated in the State Athletics Championships at Lakeside Stadium on Thursday the 24th of October. Jemma competed in the Under 11 Year Old Girls Shot Put Event. Jemma performed very well, she achieved a PB, throwing 9.19m which is a fantastic result. Jemma finished in an overall 9th place. A really great achievement that we are all very proud of. Well done again Jemma!

On Monday the 28th of October the Grade 5/6 All Stars Boys team (Hayden, Jack, Damon, Tyrone, Sam, Seb and Cristano) represented Kalinda Primary in the Hoop Time Regional Finals. The competition was tough, yet the team faced the challenge well and worked really great together, demonstrating outstanding skill and team work. They won 4 out of the 6 games they played, and finished second in their pool which was a really great result.

Thank-you to Stuart for being a great coach and thank-you to all the parents who helped out and showed their support on the day.
