Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport
Last Saturday Marist had the pleasure of hosting Iona College for our first home round of the season. In addition to the normal AIC competition points, bragging rights were on offer as a part of the Mère de Dieu Cup which is contested annually between Marist and Iona in recognition of our shared French traditions. The cup is awarded to the school which wins the most first-team matches between our two schools over the calendar year. After 6 sports this year it is now 3.5-2.5 to Iona with basketball, tennis and rugby league to finish in Term 3.
In addition to the Mère de Dieu Cup it was our Old Boys Sports Day on Saturday where we recognised the 1st XV teams from 1983, 1973, 1963 and 1953. This included a lunch, jersey presentation and culminated in a medal presentation to the players in attendance on McMahon Oval before the 1st XV match and the Old Boys joined the current students in tunnelling the 1st XV onto the field. Thank you to the events team led by Ms Bethany Halpin, Catering Mr Nathan Eyre and team, Services, Mr Matthew Tarlinton and the grounds crew, the parents who volunteered in the canteen, for their support, organisation and management of the College events celebrating Old Boys Day.
It was great to see the 1st XV return to winning ways, possibly inspired by the past generations being in attendance with a very good win, overrunning Iona in the second half to run out comfortable winners. The Chess 1st IV started the weekend with an exciting 8-all draw where we dominated the first round only to see Iona overturn it to share the spoils. In football, the 1st XI came up against competition heavyweights in 2023 in Iona. After a shaky start, which saw us three-nil down early, the team settled and matched their opponents for the majority of the match to finish losing four-nil.
Overall was a great weekend results wise with chess finishing with 3 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss, football had 19 wins, 4 draws and 5 losses and rugby ended up 18 wins, 1 draw and 9 losses.
This weekend sees us with games all over Brisbane, particularly in rugby, with St Peters Lutheran College having limited teams. Please make sure you check the draw carefully to ensure you go to the correct venue.
Last Saturday saw another weekend of terrific results across all the year levels. It really is terrific to see the hard work our boys and staff are putting in each week being rewarded on the scoreboard in the tough AIC competition.
The 1st XI took on the competition favourites in Iona, who won 10-0 last week, were a very tough challenge for our boys, who also faced the challenge of losing our captain at the heart of the defence, and our striker, both to injury late in the week. It might seem surprising to say it in a four-nil loss, but our boys were terrific throughout, worked hard, never gave in and apart from the first ten minutes matched their opponents for much of the game. There was a lot to be pleased about, many lessons learnt by the boys that we will take into future weeks, and some things to work on at training this week.
Overall we won 19 matches and drew 4 from 28 matches which was a great return overall. We scored 94 goals and conceded 46 across all matches. The team of the week goes to a number of teams who all enjoyed 7-nil victories in 6B (coached by Ms Garton); 7A (Mr Kolkenbeck-Ruh; 7B (Old Boy Seb Luongo) and 7C (Old Boy Ryan Witzerman). The 9As (Mr Whitlock from Boarding) and 3rd XI (Old Boy Jackson Grice) both won impressively 5-nil.
As the weather is starting to turn, especially in the mornings, a reminder that boys are expected to train in Marist apparel. It really has been great seeing all the blue and gold on the fields each morning and afternoon so far this year. The uniform shop now has a College tracksuit which will provide perfect cool weather protection for boys.
The cross country racing season is in full swing, with the AIC Championship only two weeks away!
There were good numbers at the first AIC meet last week, with strong performances across each age level. Please see below the details for Meet #2 this Wednesday. Important that boys are attending as many of the three meets as possible to prepare for the championships.
AIC Meet #2 – Wednesday 17 May
Queensland All Schools Championship
On Sunday there were 17 students representing the College at the Queensland Athletics All Schools Championship, held at a very tough Victoria Park course. Congratulations to all boys who battled the hills and strong opposition. Zac Milligan has qualified to represent Queensland at this years national cross country championships with his 2nd place. Boys will have another opportunity to qualify for states and nationals via the Met North trial next week.

Welcome to this year's AIC season for Term 3, 2023.
All students are invited and encouraged to trial for their respective year level for this year's team. Players are firstly directed to sign onto the tennis trials via the sports portal. Only students who have signed on will be looked at and this will also help staffing for each year level and the smooth and successful running of it.
We are so close to becoming the premier tennis school in the AIC, but we can't do without you.
This is my call out to all who are thinking of changing sports this year to please see the tennis through and be a part of history that no team has done in nearly a decade and that is to beat St Peters in the aggregate and to win the 1st IV competition, but also win as many premierships across all year levels as possible. We had one of the best seasons last year that the school has had in the last 10 years overall, we could not do this without you and with your continued help we can go one step further.
We want you to be a part of history and together we can achieve this greatness.
Please have the courage for all students to trial for this year's team. This is a shout-out to all past players who have not played for a few seasons, to dust off the racquet and we will restring and regrip for free to help you get back on the courts. We would love to have you as a valued member of the team.
Marist Open Doubles Championships
This will be held on Friday 9th and 16 June and to enter you will need to send us an email via the attached. All prizes and trophies will be awarded on Friday 16 June following the conclusion of the final.
Trials for all AIC year levels and starting with the first trial are as follows for Weeks 6, 7 and 8.
Reminder to all parents that your son needs to be signed onto the sports portal for tennis before trials begin.
AIC Clinic During the Holidays
We will also be holding AIC clinics during both weeks of the holidays for all open players, as well as the A players from Years 7-10. You will be able to register for free once the teams have been released for the first trial in Term 3 on Friday 16 June.
Numbers will be capped for both weeks so please let us know of your intentions to participate early to cement your position.
We thank all students and parents in advance, and we can achieve greatness when working together as a team. As always please feel free to contact us via email: MCATennis@marash.qld.edu.au or call 0437449523 with any queries you may have.
The boys played in the Schoolboy Invitational Opens division on Friday night. This particular group of players are very well credentialed and some of the boys have never lost a game playing Water Polo for Marist. Coached by ex-Marist student, Wil Valentine the team were in good hands and was confident going into the tournament.
They went through the rounds undefeated, with a surprise win over strong BBC and BSHS teams who boast QLD and AUS representatives.
Game 1 - vs Churchie 5-1
Game 2 - vs BGS 5-2
Game 3 - vs Padua 9-4
Game 4 - vs BSHS 7-5
Game 5 - vs BBC 7-2
In the semi-final against Padua the MCA team was in complete control for the entire match.
Semi-Final - vs Padua 14-9.
The grand final was an absolute highlight of the carnival. BSHS's team is made of mainly representative players and is widely regarded (along with BBC) as the benchmark of QLD school boys' water polo. We led for most of the match; however, relinquished the lead going into the final quarter. It was a tense few minutes with MCA scoring with seconds to go to draw the match and send it into a penalty shootout.
The penalty shootout consisted of 30 shots, that ended with Will Armstrong stopping the BSHS shooter.
Grand Final - vs BSHS 11-11 at full-time. At the penalty shootout (which comprised 15 shots each), all shooters performed amazingly. Will Armstrong saved the 15th shot and the Ashgrovians won 26-25.
Sean Bright – Water Polo
Congratulations to Sean Bright on his recent selection in the Queensland team to take part in the National Championships in July. The Queensland team manager summed it up: “we all know that this success does not come easy ad is the culmination of years of hard work, passionate commitment, sheer grit and determination.” Well done Sean, we wish you well as you represent the College and the State at this prestigious event.
Dusty Miller – Gymnastics
After placing second overall and first on high-bar and pommel horse in the Queensland State championships in April, Dusty was selected for the Queensland Team and competed at the Australian Gymnastics Championships - Level 7 U13 - at the Gold Coast on May 7-8.
It was very competitive, and Dusty put in his best effort to finish with a bronze medal for high bar. He had a top ten finish in 4 of 6 apparatus out of the 30 athletes that qualified from around Australia. Gymnastics requires a discipline and work ethic unlike most sports so well done to Dusty on this magnificent achievement.
