Connect: Year 1

The Next Fortnight of Learning

Literacy

Our phonics focus for the next two weeks are  'air' as in airy fairy and the suffix 'er'. We will continue to review the sounds taught in term one.

Our reading focus is to identify and understand the purpose of information text features. These include glossaries, diagrams, captions, headings, maps and bold text.  Students will explore a range of non-fiction text pieces as well as BTN clips.

In writing students will be learning how to construct their own informative piece on an animal before presenting to their peers.

Maths

Students are learning the importance of place value and it's connection to ordering numbers. They will use a range of manipulatives, such as lolly sticks, unifix and MS blocks, to depict two digit numbers. Students will then record their place value knowledge in a variety of ways while also exercising their mathematical reasoning skills.

Inquiry

Our inquiry unit for the term is called Places and Spaces. Student will investigate elements of community. They will discuss services in their own community and why the community has been designed in a particular way.

The habits of mind associated with the inquiry unit are persisting and thinking and communicating with clarity and precision.

Wellbeing

Our Term 2 topic for Resilience Rights and Respectful Relationships is Personal Strengths. During this unit students will learn to identify and describe their personal strengths, explain how these strengths contribute to family and school life. Students will also explore ways to care for others, including ways of making and keeping friends. It can be hard for them to share what they think they are good at so at home it's nice to praise them for non-academic qualities such as being patient, calm or caring.

Mathematician mindset!

Students have been enjoying hands on investigations during maths.  Persistence, multiple ways of thinking and sharing ideas has everyone feeling like a mathematician.

Ready... set... read!

Wednesday the 24th was National Simultaneous Storytime day. Some of the Grade 1's participated in reading The Speedy Sloth. They then had fun making sloth crafts with a range of other year levels.
