Literacy
Over the next two weeks in Literacy students will be learning about the structure and features of writing a discussion text. The sequence of learning will build upon our persuasive writing focus from earlier in the year. Students will be required to present both view points when writing a discussion text. They will learn about and experiment with persuasive devices such as exaggeration, using facts and statistics, rhetorical questions and emotive language.
Maths
In the next two weeks students will be exploring the topic of decimals further in their mathematics learning. Students will practise extending their place value understanding to tenths, hundredths and thousandths. They will learn how to read and order decimals numbers and convert them to equivalent fractions. They will have the chance to connect their recent learning in fractions to assist with their understanding of decimals by using greater than, less than or equal to symbols to show value.
Students will continue their focus on Chance & Probability in the coming weeks. They will play games that involve chance and decide if the rules are fair or unfair, expressing the likelihood of an event occurring as a fraction or percentage. Lastly they will use branching to show all possible outcomes when conducting chance experiments or playing a game.
Inquiry
As part of our Inquiry learning students will spend time in the coming weeks investigating extreme weather and disasters. This will relate to our recent learning about the role of the Bureau of Meteorology and the importance of collecting weather data. Students will explore different examples of extreme weather, preparing a presentation that explains how to prepare for a specific natural disaster.
Wellbeing
As part of our Wellbeing learning students will explore character strengths in further detail in the coming weeks. Students will use their knowledge of character strengths to discuss and problem solve challenging real life situations in a collaborative setting. They will suggest which strengths could help in certain scenarios and role play their solutions to classmates.
Literacy - Non-Fiction Writing
Last Thursday the 18th of May, Year 5 students visited the prep area to share their wonderful information reports created recently. Our visit was a huge success all round, the prep students loved learning facts from our Year 5 students, and the older students really enjoyed sharing their writing with younger students. We look forward to doing more cross level activities such as this in the future!
Mathematics Learning - 'Angry Birds' 3D Objects
As part of our recent Mathematics learning, students participated in a lesson which required them to connect a 3D object with it's corresponding net. Students constructed various 3D objects including cubes, cylinders, square based pyramids or cones. They had to identify the properties of their 3D object by naming how many faces, edges and vertices it had. We added an element of creativity for the students by asking them to turn their 3D objects into 'Angry Bird' characters.
