Connect: Year 3

May 2023

Welcome to the Year 3 Connect! We have a couple of important items in our reminders, so please make sure you check them out.

Reminders:

  • Moonlit Sanctuary: Our excursion is fast approaching! Next week on Thursday 1st of June 2/3C, 3A and 3B will be heading to the sanctuary to learn about conservation and our threatened animal species. More information will come home in the next couple of days.
  • Labelling clothing: We have been collecting a large number of jumpers from the playgrounds after play time. Please ensure your child's jumpers are labelled clearly so we can get them back to you as soon as possible. Thank you!

What is happening in our classroom's?

Literacy: The students have thoroughly enjoyed the text 'Walk of the Whales' by Nick Bland. Although an entertaining book at first glance, this story has been a great opportunity to look beyond the words in the text. The students explored author's purpose, point of view and 'reading between the lines'. During our Writing sessions, the students have explored what makes a good narrative 'amazing'. Maybe you could ask your child how they start their narrative in an interesting way!

Maths: We decided to do a little detour during our Maths lessons this week. We have been learning about shape, both 2D and 3D! The students learned about the language of faces, vertices and edges. We have also continued learning about Place Value. Over the next few weeks will dive into multiplication and division! Practising times tables can be a great way for your child to support their learning in these areas. This practise helps support their understanding multiplying larger numbers and making the connection between the operations.

Inquiry: Our Blue Marble unit has been so fascinating! The students are so excited to visit Moonlit Sanctuary which will help kickstart our conservation campaigns and research into endangered Australian animals. We have also been looking at concepts to help support our overall conservation learning. This has included learning the difference between 'living' and 'non-living'; learning about lifecycles and about different types of habitats. The students went out to do a scavenger hunt and had a ball! Most students flocked to the veggie garden where lots of living things could be explored!

Wellbeing: Last week we started our mini 'Zones' booklet. This booklet includes all of the strategies, language and skills that the students have been learning over the past term. Each page will reflect a 'zone' and students will be including some strategies to help them regulate their feelings and actions. These will be completed over the next fortnight and brought home so you can see what they have been working hard on!

Look at what we have here!

You will notice that the banner for our connect this week is of a crocodile craft we made to help our students grasp the concept of 'greater than' and 'less than'. We listened to a song for a few lessons to help us understand and then showed our knowledge off with our craft. See the link below for the fun song... beware its catchy!
