Grade 1/2 News

Term 2, Week 4

Reminders:

This week is Education Week. Our families are invited to join us for our Friday session at school from 2.15pm to 3:00pm. This visit will then lead into our 3pm assembly.

We have a curriculum day on Wednesday 24th May.

What we have been up to..

This term we have been completing science experiments as part of our unit on 'Stimulating Science'. This week students have continued to test hypothesis - by predicting and then finding out, whether raisins would float or sink. The students soon worked out that they did neither, as they 'danced', going up and down in the jar of soda water. Last week we talked about mixing ingredients to watch our volcanoes erupt.

This week we also enjoyed our excursion to see 'Are we there yet?' The students loved the bus ride and then our lunch at the QEO (the grass at Rosalind Park was a bit wet to sit on). The oval was then a fun place for the students to run around and expend all their energy before we went into the Capital Theatre to watch the show. The students laughed and smiled throughout the performance and managed to navigate the tricky seats that wanted to fold our lighter students in two.

Learning in Weeks 5 & 6

Mathematics: We are looking at Addition and the many different strategies that we can use to efficiently solve additional problems.

English: During Reading lessons students will be continuing to use the strategies 'Recognise literary elements' (genre, plot, character, setting, problem/resolution) and also 'Use prior knowledge to predict and connect with the text'.

In week 5, students will learn more about the phoneme 'air' and the most common spelling choices (air and are) and will be practising high frequency words hair and fairy.

In week 6, students will practise the 'oo - book' sound and most common spelling choices (oo and u). They will use this knowledge to support them in learning and practising the high frequency words look, took and put.

Our Writing lessons will begin to focus on procedure writing. Students will learn about the structure of a procedure piece of writing.

In Respectful Relationships our term topic is 'Help Seeking'. The students thoroughly enjoy these sessions. Over the next two weeks they will explore ways to help and support their friends.
