Upcoming Events:

Week 5: Monday 22nd May - Senior School Athletics Carnival

Week 5: Wednesday 24th May - Pupil Free Day

Melbourne Excursion:

Grade 5/6 had a great time in Melbourne on Monday. We explored the Metro training system by travelling to and from our activities. The Old Melbourne Gaol was a wonderful opportunity for students to explore some of Melbourne's history and how early prisoners were treated. The tour of the MCG was a particular highlight of the trip, where students were able to step on to the ground, as well as walk through the MCG Sports Museum and the 'Game On' experience. Overall, we were very proud of our students and the way they represented our school during the excursion.

Writing:

During Writing in Weeks 5-6, we start to look at the genre of Information Texts. We will explore the structure and language features of this genre, culminating in students completing a report on an important Australian historical event.

Reading:

We are well into our whole class Reader's Notebook text, Midnite by Rudolph Snow. The novel ties in with our Topic unit this term: Australian History. During Weeks 5 & 6, students will develop their understanding of asking questions throughout the reading process and using evidence from the text to support their answers. They will also use quotations from the book to support their response to comprehension questions.

Mathematics:

During Term 2, we have a strong Number focus (working with the 4 operations) to help strengthen core number skills. As well as this, in Weeks 5-6 we will explore the topic of 'Patterns and Algebra'. Within this unit, we will be developing student's ability to problem solve by working through open-ended and authentic (real world) mathematical challenges.

Topic and STEAM:

In our 'Museums in Motion' unit, students have been researching specific events in Australia's history. Over the next week, we have asked students to start bringing in materials they can use in their diorama, which we will start creating next Tuesday (23/5/23).

In STEAM, our students are working in their year group cohorts. The Grade 5s are exploring Stop-Motion animation, and have started to explore the use of webcams, lighting and effective storyboarding. They have been asked to bring in simple materials to create their scenes of their short movie creations. The Grade 6s are continuing to deepen their robotics skills, and will start the journey of building a 'battle-bot'. Over the next few weeks they will be working on developing their knowledge of gear ratios.
