"Be The Best That You Can Be" - Celebrating Student Wellbeing and

Growth in Learning

Pasta Bridges

As part of the final part of the Physics Unit for Year 7, students had the opportunity to look at how Forces act on a bridge. The students were given dry pasta and glue and were asked to be engineers for the lesson and design and build bridges so that they could hold a weight.

Year 8 Science - heart dissection

Year 8 Science students are currently learning about biology and recently completed a sheep heart dissection practical which they all enjoyed (especially Jimmy).

Yr. 8 Mandarin

Our Yr. 8 students have been busy in their Mandarin Language class creating Mandarin picture books. These books are designed to help students understand the context of words and how to pronounce them accurately. Students had a great time making these books and find they are very helpful when learning a language.

Year 7 Dodgeball Tournament

Last week the Yr. 7 home group captains planned and ran a dodgeball tournament on Thursday and Friday at lunchtime for the entire year level to participate in. In the weekly meetings, the home group captains and teachers, along with Mr. Joyce, planned out how everything would run. We decided what the fixture would look like, rules, how to set up the court, and even what colour sashes to use. Each home group got to play each other once across Thursday and Friday before leading into a grand final!

There was tough competition, and everyone played their best with many students playing in each home group. In the end, every home group but one managed to get a win. The two teams with the most wins at the end were 7A and 7E who played in the grand final match, with the rest of the year level cheering on from the benches. Although it was close, 7E came out on top, becoming the winners of the Dodgeball tournament.

All the feedback at the end of this wonderful event was positive and everyone who participated had fun, which was the main goal. We would like to congratulate 7E on their well-deserved title of Dodgeball champions. We would also like to thank all the students who participated, as well as all the teachers who came down to help and support. We look forward to organising something similar in the future!

WHSC is thrilled to present the Year 7 Virtual Reality Project for 2022!

Over several sessions throughout Term 4, all Year 7 students will complete a VR Project with WHSC's "Artist in Residence", Susannah Langley. The program aims to provide students with an opportunity to engage with modern technology and understand how it can be applied to the STEM context with a particular focus on Arts and Design. The entire project is student driven and will provide an incredible opportunity for students to express themselves through their creations.

The program will be facilitated by Susannah Langley with the support of the Year 7 Visual Art, Materials, and Digital Technology teachers. Susie is a Melbourne–based visual artist whose practice is rooted in experimental drawing, installation and sound. She often uses unconventional media such as conductive material, found objects, field recording and virtual reality to explore ideas of history, memory, movement, feeling and space.

The program began this Tuesday 13th September with an "Ideation Day" in the WHSC library. Here, students had the opportunity to explore the technologies that they will be using throughout the program, as well as brainstorm an overarching theme for the work that they will create. They will now develop this work in their Art, Materials, and Digital Technology classes in the first few weeks of Term 4. To conclude the project, students will participate in a "Consolidation Day" where they will be guided through the process of combining their work and turning their designs into digital pieces that can be interacted with in virtual reality.

Upon its completion, students' VR works will be exhibited to the school community. We will provide updates throughout the project and are excited to share the students' work with you later next term.

Should you wish to view and experience the work from last year’s VR Project, please feel free to wander around the 2021 virtual world through THIS LINK (note: if you are unfamiliar with Mozilla Hubs, the experience may be best enjoyed on a computer to start with. Make sure you have your sound on as well...the students' soundscapes attached to their works are amazing!).
