Melbourne Writers Festival Excursion

Last week, a group of 23 Year 3 - 6 students travelled to Melbourne to attend the Melbourne Writers Festival. Here we listened to 4 of Australia’s most essential voices in children’s literature. See below some key points that Cooper W, Izzy K, Rylan M and Ellie B took away from the day.

Katrina Nannested - Katrina shared with us that she gets inspiration for her books from things she loves, people she knows and the pictures she draws. She said that drawing is superfood for our imaginations and daydreaming is our biggest writing superpower.

Kirli Saunders - Kirli is an Aboriginal poet who turns her poems into stories. She taught us all about black cockatoos (the main character in one of her books) and how they only eat the Sheoak plant. Kirli taught us how to care for country and ourselves.

Gabrielle Wang - Gabby is the Australian Children's Laureate. She shared stories from her childhood how they inspired the books she has written. She also told us that Imagination is like a muscle, if you don't use it, you lose it.

Eddie Woo - Eddie shared his love of maths with us. His main message was that every good lesson is a story and every good lesson is a story.
