MATHS IN SPORT

Mathematics is all around us and we often underestimate how often we use our mathematical skills. Many students and staff members are currently very keenly watching to see how their footy team progresses towards the AFL Grand Final.

Here are a few footy Maths activities you may wish to use at home over the coming weeks:

-List as many ways as you can think that numbers are used during a game of AFL.

-Coin Toss to Start a Game: Each coin has a Tail side and a Head side. The coin is tossed before the game to decide which direction the teams will kick. Complete a trial of 20 coin tosses; keep a tally of the result of each toss. Can you predict from this what the chances are of winning the toss if you call Heads or Tails? Do you think that there would be any difference in the outcome if you chose to complete less or more trial tosses?

-Watch a game of football and record the scores, show your working out of the running total as you go.

-Plan a trip to the footy. Think about the cost of tickets, transport, food and drinks purchased, souvenirs, etc.

Problem solving questions:

1. If each team has 18 players, how many players are on the field in total?

2. If each team has 4 interchange players, how many interchange players are there in total?

3. If it costs $3 for each team member to get to the Australian Football by bus, how much will it cost if there are 22 players and 5 support staff?

4. If each one of the 22 players has half an orange at half-time, how many oranges will be eaten?

5. If each one of the 22 players drinks 1 litre of water during the game, how many litres of water will be consumed?

6. If each player drinks-one-and-a-half litres, how many litres of water will be consumed?

7. If 12 players have both their ankles taped, how many ankles are taped in total?

8. If each ankle takes half a metre of tape, how much tape will be used in total?

9. If 6 players drink 3 cups of Powerade each, how many cups of Powerade will be consumed?

10. The runner runs 3 kms each quarter. How many kilometres will he run over the game?

Remember to justify your answer by showing your working out!
