Boroondara Student Sustainability Summit Team

These year 5/6 students are in the midst of busily researching, building and preparing a workshop to present at the Boroondara Student Sustainability Leadership Summit on Tuesday 11th October.

Changemakers

Year 5 students went to Auburn High for their Sharing the planet unit of inquiry to hear from some of their incredible changemakers. We heard from Sascha who spoke about her involvement in the Zoos Victoria Youth Program and Elly and Elsa about their Fruit Salad Club and inclusion at AHS.  We also heard from Amy who shared about their Food Drive initiative for Food Bank.

We were inspired to take action and held a mini Purple Day celebration to welcome, accept, celebrate, encourage and respect all diversity.

We also ran a mini Food Drive to add to the Auburn High collection, contributing two boxes and three bags worth of goodies. Thank you to all the families who donated and supported this great cause.

AIESEC Global Goals and Food Bank drive

Recently the global youth leadership organisation AIESEC conducted workshops for our neighbours at Auburn High. We were grateful to be invited to join their students for this opportunity.

The following is an excerpt of the report by Kristie Satilmis, Assistant Principal of Year 7-9:

Key messages:

  1.  We all have the power to make a difference, and every little bit helps!
  2. A happy plate is an empty plate – don’t buy/serve up more than you’re planning to eat.
  3. Consider your ‘food miles’ when selecting produce – for example, make the decision to choose the Australian oranges instead of the Californian ones.  They’ve travelled such a long way to arrive in your fruit bowl!

Thanks to Yuna and all the facilitators for these thought-provoking and engaging presentations.

The presentations aligned perfectly with the current Food Drive for Food Bank Victoria initiative being run by our student leaders.  It is fantastic to see the rapidly growing stacks of non-perishable items donated by our school community for the benefit of those who are not as well off as we are.  Auburn South Primary School is also supporting our Food Drive which is very much appreciated.

AIESEC is an international, youth-run, not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation that provides young people with leadership development, cross-cultural internships and global volunteer exchange experiences.  The organisation focuses on empowering young people to make a progressive social impact.

Thank you to Auburn High for sharing this wonderful opportunity.
