Book Week

Congratulations Year 6, Community Team!

Wow! what terrific Book Week celebrations we’ve had at ASPS this week. The Y6 Community Team: Meg, Chloe, Laz, May, Amalia, Charlotte, Giaan and Milla have work tirelessly, and enthusiastically to organise whole school participation in Book Week. The team read all 6 shortlisted Children’s Book Council Australia [CBCA] Early Childhood books to every class [156 readings!]. Each class, then nominated their favourite book and from that an overall, ASPS favourite book was determined, Walk Of The Whales, Nick Bland. The ASPS favourite book was then compared to the CBCA nominated winner, Jetty Jumping, Rowe/Somerville. There’s a talking point! The Community Team also ran a high energy, fun filled, book week parade at Monday’s assembly!

Thank you, Year 6 Community Team.

Morris Gleitzman Visits

On Thursday the 25th of August, Morris Gleitzman visited Auburn South’s year 4-6’s. Morris discussed with the students how to find ideas to write about in their narratives, and how to start a book. Morris talked about how a book structure works and what you need to make an engaging story for the readers.

When Morris was 16 years old he wanted to become a writer as a job. But found he had a problem, which was not being able to find ideas or problems for his stories. So he would go to the library to find the ‘secret’ of how authors come up with ideas for their books. He would read the first page of each book, to see if he could find the secret. He discovered that on every first page there would be a problem within the first few sentences.

It was very interesting to find out how a published author would find ideas for his books. Morris answered questions politely to the students, and was able to sign any books of the students. The students quickly became engaged in what Morris had to say and enjoyed the presentation very much.

District Athletics

On behalf of the Auburns South Community, I would personally like to thank the students who competed at the Kooyong District Athletics Carnival on Thursday 25th August. The students from Auburn South produced a terrific effort in team and individual events with many competitors making it through to the Division round. It was also pleasing to see the students from Auburn South supporting and cheering each other at the event.

An update will be provided with a list of students that have qualified for the Division Athletics Carnival when official results are published.

I also would like to extend my thanks to Marcus Wicher, Mike McDiarmid and Emily Hui who also worked on events and supported students with marshalling on the day. Thank you to all the parents that came out to show their support as it helped motivate the Auburn South team.

Kind Regards,

Girl's Soccer Tournament

Our girl's soccer team played incredibly well in the Region Soccer Finals. They won their first three games, with their most notable achievement being a 6-nil win. They suffered a loss in game four, ending with a penalty shoot out in the final game where they won. This meant that they placed 3rd overall.

Prep Botanical Gardens Excursion

On Wednesday, August 17th, the Preps enjoyed a day trip to the Royal Botanical Gardens. The excursion linked to our unit of inquiry inquiring into how an “Appreciation of nature inspires creativity”. Students had time to explore the gardens in small groups searching for items on their scavenger hunt list. After a quick lunch and some huge games of ‘Duck Duck Goose’, we began the afternoon workshops. We did leaf rubbings, nature mandalas, a walk through the camellia garden (though there was some confusion about it being a “chameleon garden” and a small amount of subsequent disappointment), and a story about the oak tree that was hit by lightning. Some students left flowers and offerings for the fairies that are said to live in the tree, and one student even left sticks for the “fairies to build furniture”.

Appreciation of nature can inspire creativity is the central idea of our unit of inquiry, How we express ourselves.

We were explorers enjoying the beauty of the gardens and gained an understanding of how our Indigenous peoples interacted with the flora and fauna in the gardens.  We were inspired by what we saw and are growing our wonderings in the form of questions and investigations.

A big thank you to our parent helpers for volunteering their time for our big day at the gardens!

Prep Soccer Clinic

The Preps learnt lots of new skills, including kicking, dribbling and defending. The clinic was run by Ashburton United Soccer Clinic.

Gummy Bear Competition

As a part of National Science Week each class was tasked with the challenge to investigate how to make a gummy bear grow.

The gummy bears grew from 2cms to 4.5cms.

Professor Wicher announced that the winners were 1D & 4A - congratulations!

Canteen Volunteer Sign-Up

The canteen is always looking for new volunteers! Come and join this dynamic team and your kids will get a kick out of seeing you help out at school! Click below to sign-up or  speak to one of our super friendly canteen managers for more information.

We’ve had lots of new families join our school community so we thought it might be worthwhile giving you 5 important tips for canteen:

1. Lunch can be ordered every day via the Flexischools app. Please make sure you setup your account with your child’s name and correct class. The cut off each day is 9am

2. We have a variety of hot foods available each day, please refer to the “daily specials” and “hot food” on the menu. Please note, all food items are delivered to the classroom at lunch time ONLY (12.30pm), so you need to remember to pack your child some morning tea!

3. If you forget to pack lunch for your child or forget to order lunch via Flexischools before 9am, don’t worry - please call the school and ask to speak to Canteen staff. Usually, the canteen will offer students an “emergency lunch” and parents will receive an invoice via Xuno. Emergency lunch is usually a cheese sandwich or sushi, depending on what us available at short notice.  Please note, all emergency lunches will incur a $2 service fee

4. The canteen accepts cash payment ONLY (we do not have credit card facilities onsite). Gold coins or up to $5 in cash will be accepted at the canteen window for the purchase of treats, drinks or frozen items (eg. Icypoles)

5.Parents and grandparents are welcome to volunteer at the canteen. No experience required, we will teach you everything. All volunteers must have a valid Working With Children (WWC) check - it is free, please apply here https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/individuals/applicants/how-to-apply-1

If you have any questions or would like more information regarding the above, please feel free to contact Liz Passador at aspscanteen@gmail.com or (03) 9882 2140 . We look forward to seeing you and your children at the canteen!
