Level 1

It is hard to believe we have come to the end of Term 3! We’ve been busy reading, writing, counting AND becoming palaeontologists! Over the last fortnight, we have also enjoyed activities supporting cyber safety, Indigenous literacy, and wellbeing.

During Reading Workshops, we continued our focus on writer’s purpose and also began exploring prefixes and suffixes. The children enjoyed looking at base words and making new words by adding either a prefix at the beginning or a suffix at the end. The children are working hard in their reading comprehension groups and enjoy exploring texts to find the main idea, sequence events, identify cause and effect and make predictions. We also LOVE reading – it’s so wonderful to read for enjoyment and many children completed the 2022 Premiers Reading Challenge. Well done to everyone who participated.

In Writing, we have had a lot of fun learning about the features of procedural texts and the importance of using verbs and nouns. Together with our classmates, we listened to the story ‘How to wash a Woolly Mammoth’ and collectively recalled all the verbs and nouns we heard. We thought of other animals that would be hard to wash and wrote our own procedures. If anyone has a pet unicorn, dragon, lion, sloth or giraffe, we can certainly pass on the fabulous instructions the Year 1s have written for washing these animals!

In Mathematics, we have been focusing on Multiplication and Time. The children were able to participate in different activities to practise various multiplication strategies such as arrays, repeated addition and equal groups.

For Time, we discussed the features of a clock, telling time to the hour and half hour. We compared analogue and digital clocks and used many different hands-on materials and games to consolidate our understanding.

To complete our Inquiry Unit ‘Dinosaurs and More’, the children were able to demonstrate their new knowledge through the creation of a diorama depicting a dinosaur in its habitat. The children then presented their diorama to the class in the form of a Show and Tell presentation. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to share their understanding of dinosaurs, their features and the habitats in which they lived, when they roamed Earth.

As part of eSafety week, we were fortunate to have Brainstorm Productions visit our school to perform ‘Saving Lil and Archie’. The live performance focused on resilience, regulating emotions, cyber safety and positive connections. The children were captivated!

Miss Bell and Miss Tomkins organised a fabulous morning last Wednesday for The Great Book Swap, in support of Indigenous Literacy Day. The children loved looking at all the books, occasionally finding it tricky to choose their favourite! It was very exciting and there were lots of smiles as children left with a book to enjoy!

Thursday 8th September was R U OK? Day and a wonderful opportunity to reflect on and talk about the ways we can support each other and check-in on our friends and how they are feeling. The children also reflected on the people in their lives that they can talk to when they need support. These yellow hands were created to capture this and the children proudly wore them home.

Wishing the children and families all the best for school holidays. We hope everyone finds some time to relax and enjoy. Hopefully more Spring weather is on the way!
