Foundation’s Special Visitors

On Wednesday 31st August, Foundation students were fortunate to have a special visit from our local fire fighters. Students learned about what is a ‘good’ fire and what is a ‘bad’ fire. They practised how to ‘Stop, drop, cover and roll’ and ‘Get down low and go, go, go’. They also viewed the special uniform equipment that fire fighters wear to protect themselves, when fighting a fire.

On the following Wednesday, the fire fighters visited again. This time, Foundation students each had a turn at using the fire hose (to water our school oval). They also climbed up into the fire truck to see all the amazing equipment there. It was a highly valuable, engaging and memorable experience for our students.

Thank you for talking about and supporting your child to draw their ‘Safe Meeting Place’ for your family in the event of an emergency. With school holidays fast approaching, this is an ideal time to have your plan in place.

Recently, Foundation students also had a mystery visit from the Tooth Fairy who had left a letter and a gift for all students. We hope students are enjoying using their special toothbrush from the Tooth Fairy, at home. Students wrote about what they think the Tooth Fairy does with collected teeth. Whilst many believed the Tooth Fairy magically turned teeth into coins, some thought they made a necklace, petals or grinds them up!

To celebrate National eSmart Week, Brainstorm Productions presented, ‘Saving Lil & Archie’.  This entertaining live performance showed Foundation students ways they can regulate their emotions and connect with others in a positive way. It explored strategies for the safe use of technology, dealing with bullying and getting the right balance between screen time, sleep, exercise and face-to-face communication. The presentation was met with cheers and applause from the audience.

On Wednesday 7th September, Foundation students celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day. They went ‘swapping’ at the hugely successful Great Book Swap, eager to find a new book. Students listened to ‘No Way Yirrikipayi!’, a rhyming story about Yirrikipayi the crocodile who lives on the Tiwi Islands. Hungry, he goes hunting, chasing animals in the sea and on land with no success. Students used their creative skills to make their own Yirrikipayi the crocodile. Thank you to our Foundation families for supporting this day.

A reminder that next week on Wednesday 14th September Foundation students are invited to our annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic. Please support your child to bring a teddy bear/soft toy to school on Monday in readiness for this event.

Have a wonderful week!
