PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Welcome back to term three!

Subject selection and course counselling

This term is a busy part of the year when students and families begin to look forward to pathway choices and subject selections for their future.

We encourage families and carers to become as involved and informed about the options available to students as possible to support these decisions. In the short term, it is important to find the right fit of subjects for students to enable them to feel happy and successful at school.

It was really great to see such an amazing turn out to the Subject Selection and Pathway Expo night on Thursday. We appreciate that not all families are able to attend evenings such as this so if you have any questions about the subject selection process please get in contact with the school so that we are able to provide the best advice.

Students will be provided with individualised course counselling with trained counsellors on the dates below. Families and carers also have the opportunity to attend this meeting and contribute to these discussions.

Year 11 into 12 – Wednesday, 19th July

Year 10 into 11 –  Wednesday, 26th July

Year 9 into 10 – Friday, 28th July

Introducing Shane Elevato

Whilst Principal Erin Wright is on leave for term three, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Shane Elevato as Acting Principal during this time.  Shane joins us from Colac Secondary College where he is currently the Executive Principal.  He is very familiar with our school and context having been a leading teacher at Surf Coast during our formative years.   We will welcome Shane on board from Wednesday this week.

Upcoming changes to NAPLAN reporting

Ahead of NAPLAN results for students being released from Monday 17 July 2023, there are some changes to this year’s reporting. These changes are being introduced nationally by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

NAPLAN will continue to measure student achievement in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, and grammar and punctuation but the results will now be presented in 4 proficiency levels:

These are:

  • exceeding
  • strong
  • developing
  • needs additional support.

This change will give schools, parents and carers clearer information that details student achievement against new proficiency levels.

Students’ NAPLAN reports will continue to show how they are tracking against their peers and provide an indication of their skill levels against national averages and where we would expect them to be in order to get the most out of schooling. This provides valuable information to teachers about how we can continue to support your child.

Each set of NAPLAN results is an important milestone but it’s also important that students know that one result does not define them – these results are about making sure every student gets the support they need so they can continue to get the best from their learning.

When we provide you with your results, you will also receive information about what the new proficiency levels mean.

As ever, you’re welcome to speak to your child’s Mentor Teacher or Learning Community Leaders with any questions about these changes.
