Shadow play: Wayang kulit
To finish our turtle theme for the term, Year 1 and 2 students are making turtle shadow puppets and putting on their own wayang kulit (shadow puppet plays) in Indonesian. The art of wayang kulit has a long history on the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali. Traditionally, a performance goes from sunset to sunrise but we’re modifying this slightly - our only rule is that once behind the screen the dalang (puppeteer) is only allowed to speak Indonesian.
Sampai jumpa! I will be on leave in Semester 2. While I am away, Sarah Kline will be taking the Indonesian classes, supported by our wonderful Language Assistant, Arti.
