Scott Darlow [king of roasting] came to our school to perform and share Indigenous culture. He sang ‘Solid Rock’, which was about the sacredness of Indigenous land. Scott shared about times he has faced racism when he has told people about Indigenous heritage. He used the acronym FLUTE - forgiveness, love, understanding, tolerance, and empathy and explained how if we applied this it would help relationships between people.
One of the funniest parts of the concert was when he made our classmate Billy go up on stage because he was wearing a Geelong Jersey AND had a mullet both of which Scott loved. Billy had so much stage fright but was seen as a double threat by Scott because they barracked for the same footy team. Billy was able to have a photo with Scott Darlow which was also a highlight.

So proud of our SP students! In Term 2, Senior Primary students studied the history of immigration to Australia. We began with the Indigenous perspective toward European arrival, then looked at the different migrant groups and their contributions to the Australia we know today. The unit ended with further understanding the complexities of refugees and asylum seekers. How can we ‘act justly, and love mercy’ as Micah 6:8 calls us to do? The school leaders created a competition for students to donate non-perishable goods to create the longest line of groceries, which would then be gifted to the ASRC (Asylum Seekers Resource Centre) in Footscray. This organisation supports refugees with community meals and pantry items (alongside a range of other services) and they were incredibly appreciative of MECS’ efforts.
The students who won the longest line, were treated to hot chips and some free time!
A huge thank you to all the families who donated so generously, to our students for their enthusiastic learning, and for our staff for driving to the centre to hand over the many, many boxes of goods. Each Term, Senior Primary looks for ways to show a real-life hand response from their learning, as our deep hope during this unit was to work toward understanding that God’s community is continually being built for the betterment of all rather than the exclusion of others.

Last term the Junior Primary students went on an excursion to Maroondah Dam in Healesville. It was a wonderful, sunny day with beautiful clear skies and was enjoyed by all. The children enjoyed some rotations throughout the day that complimented our teaching for our Core Studies topic - 'What's Outside my Window?'.
Children walked to the top of the dam wall to map below from a 'bird's eye view', they went on a scavenger hunt to find natural (or God made) and man made resources, the children enjoyed a tour of key locations within the park and they had lots of fun making boats out of nature and floating them down the stream. After lunch, students had a ball playing some games at the park before it was time to go home. We had an amazing team of parent volunteers who gave up their time to help on our excursion which made it a wonderful success!
