Thank you God for MECS since 1973
These are the words along the wall on our new mural under the new JP building.
The mural is intended to create a bright and inviting play space, while celebrating 50 years of schooling here at MECS.
As MECS was established in 1973, the mural incorporates several elements of 1970s art including wide flowing lines, flowers and bubble writing. Over the swirly background are silhouettes of children playing things that are ideal in that space, and which also are reminiscence of the 70s including hopscotch, skipping, hula hooping and dancing. The exception is the dancing boys who do look more modern. Artistic license was used!
The colours were carefully chosen to reflect not only the 70s vibe, but also to blend with the environment harmoniously. This decision was the hardest step! Thank you to Nikki Baldwin, Alyce Vanderjagt and Dee Johnson who all helped refine those choices.
A big thank you to the children who contributed to painting on the celebration day, fellow art teacher Alyce Vanderjagt, staff volunteers, those who helped on the working bee, and Carly Cap… who contributed a projector for drawing on the silhouettes. Thank you also to our maintenance crew who will finish off the last very high bits of painting and add the sealing coat.
This was a real community project and it was lovely having the children take a keen interest in its progress as it was worked on. They readily encouraged and showed their appreciation, and several shared their inspiration to become artists themselves when they grow up!

JP artists learned to make clay pinch pots , then most took on the challenge of turning them into imaginative creatures.
They worked hard to ensure good joins and we had very few breaks as a result, despite the air drying clay which can be tricky.
The children either made impressions in the clay to form real texture, or added implied texture with paint pens on the final coat.
Well done JPs!
