Visual Arts

We have had a great start to the term in Visual Arts.  The year 4’s began looking at Optical Art, sometimes known as Op art. This was an art movement that began in the 1960’s. Artists like Bridget Riley used pattern and colour to create optical illusions. The works give the viewer the impression of movement, hidden images, flashing and vibrating patterns, or swelling or warping.

The students worked on creating their own black and white optical illusion inspired by Bridget Riley’s work. Fantastic work by Nithum and Jack are seen below.

Performing Arts

Save the Date - The school production is schedulled for Tuesday the 12th of September. All of the year levels have been introduced to their class acts and we will be rehearsing to pefect our singing and dancing over the next few weeks. Notices about costume requirements will be coming home this week, if there are any questions regarding these please don’t hesitate to contact me or the class teachers. We are looking forward to an exciting, fun filled evening where all the students have a chance to experience the thrill of performing on stage.

French

  • GRADE 1 - The students are practising their oral skills by asking each other what their name is:
  • GRADE 2: We are continuing the topic 'In my town'. The students are starting to learn the names of shops or places in a town. They are now able to use the expression 'il y a', which means 'there is' or 'there are'.
  • GRADES 3 & 4:The students are using the vocabulary that they memorised last Term, to fill in missing words in a book about prehistoric times. We organised a little competition and the fastest team to find the missing words earned Dojo points that will count towards the end of year competition.
  • GRADE 5/6A: Tiasha and Scarlett have written the script of a play that will be performed at assembly in a few weeks. The students will play 4 scenes of a famous book by French author Jules Verne, 'Around the world in 80 days'. We have distributed the roles and they are rehearsing in class.

  • GRADE 5/6S: The students are learning a French song that they will sing at assembly soon: 'Je te donne' (I give you) by Jean-Jacques Goldman.

STEAM

What an exciting start to term three. In STEAM, we are learning about chemical science. To start it all off, and to celebrate Winter and mixing, the students in prep, grade 1 and grade 2 made instant snow! There was lots of excitement and I heard words like "expanding", "it's growing", "it's cold", and "oh wow"!

The grade 4s investigated heating materials up this week. There were four different materials: chocolate buds, oil, water, and a spoon. The students put their materials into a bag and then put them in a warm place to see what happened. The chocolate melted, of course, and everyone wanted to eat them! Their materials have now gone into the freezer, I wonder what will happen?

The grade 5s and 6s are doing coding and robotics this term. After getting to know the new Vex Go robotics kits, they made Mars buggies this week with their team, and drove them around. Not everyone got to finish, but they'll all get a turn at coding and driving them over the term.
