Leadership is learnable, it begins with leading oneself! Leadership is inspirational, it inspires in others the sustainable values that guide their pursuit of success and significance in life.

At Oakleigh Grammar, Student Leaders are encouraged to develop their leadership skills in order to support fellow students, and to benefit the wider community. Opportunities to develop these qualities are provided through a range of learning experiences, both in their everyday school life, and in targeted leadership programs. Every leader is encouraged to build their own sense of themselves as leaders.

On Monday 26 March, Junior School Leaders, George Dimitropoulos and Ava Smirnakos, together with Year 6 SRC members, Paris Gerantidis and Catherine Giannaors, were involved in the National Young Leaders Day.

The National Young Leaders Day in an annual event hosted by the Halogen Foundation for young people who are aspiring to lead themselves and others. The four students participated in a daylong program, where they engaged with keynote speakers, contributed to a discussion and applied their learning through interactive activities and reflection. Students were inspired after the conference and they are ready to support their School, Community and their fellow students in many different ways.

Hellenic Culture

Students of Oakleigh Grammar have been very busy the last two weeks of Term 1, representing the School in different Hellenic events celebrating Greek Independence Day.

On Thursday 22nd March two students were invited by The Consulate General ,Mr Dimitrios Michalopoulos, to a Reception for the National Day of Greece. The event took place at the Hellenic Museum. Jason Mavroudis and Claudia Ciempka accompanied myself to the reception. Both students had the honour of performing at the event. Jason sang the Greek National Anthem, and Claudia the Australian National Anthem. The performances from both students were outstanding, bringing emotional feelings to all guests!

On Friday 23rd March we had the honour welcoming the Hellenic Presidential Guard “EVZONES” at Oakleigh Grammar. A special service with the presence of His Grace Bishop Ezekiel, and His Grace Bishop Iakovos took place at Sts Anargiri church, followed by a special assembly at our School. Five EVZONES with Lieutenant Konstantinos Koutsoumbidis marched from church to School in their special costumes, accompanied by our flag bearers and drummers.

We had also the great honour of welcoming Lieutenant General Grigorio Prezerakos, Major Panagiotis Rountos and Captain Paraskevi Sirmi. A special presentation was delivered to students about the history of the Hellenic Presidential Guard, which celebrates 150 years this year.

Students and staff were very impressed with this special visit and very excited to see the Hellenic Presidential Guard “EVZONES”. A huge thank to all staff members for their contribution to this historical event for our School, as well as to Mr Antoni Tsourdalakis, General Secretary -  Organisational Committee Greek National Day, for the great opportunity of welcoming the Hellenic Presidential Guard “EVZONES”.

On Saturday 24th March SRC members were invited by the Hellenic RSL Sub Branch to commemorate Greek Independence Day. Students took part in a wreath laying ceremony at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance where they laid a wreath on behalf of Oakleigh Grammar. Follow the ceremony students were invited to the Hellenic RSL where they joined the members there for lunch.

On the same day the Oakleigh Grammar School Choir was invited by the Greek National Day Organisational Committee, to attend the official Cocktail Reception for the Hellenic Presidential Guard (Evzones).  The performance was held at Malvern Town Hall, and the School Choir performed the Australian National Anthem and the Greek National Anthem.

Congratulations to all students who took part and attended the event. Congratulations are also extended to Ms Morgan and Mr Damatopoulos for preparing the students for this event. On behalf of our School I would like to thank Mr Antoni Tsourdalakis, for inviting us to this special event.

On Sunday 25th March Senior School Leaders represented our School at St Eustathios church before they attended their annual parade for the celebration of Greek Independence Day. The same day another group of students represented our School at our parish church, Sts Anargiri. Students attended the Doxology Service by holding Greek and Australian flags.

I would like to extend my congratulations to all Oakleigh Grammar students who represented the School with pride at these events.

Greek Welfare Centre’s Easter Food Hamper Appeal

This term our Year 7 students have been learning about Great Lent as a time of spiritual renewal, where we reflect on how we interact with God and with each other through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Students were involved in purchasing, collecting, and packaging non-perishable food items for the Greek Welfare Centre Easter Appeal. As a year level they went to Oakleigh Centro and purchased food items for the Easter Appeal. A smaller group of students were then selected to help sort and package donations, which will be distributed to families within our local community in time for Easter.

On behalf of our students we would like to thank everyone for once again giving so generously. God bless!

On Friday 23rd March, our Year 6 Byzantine Choir chanted hymns dedicated to the Feast of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and Independence Day vividly to the Evzones and the congregation in our church of Sts Anargiri.  It was an emotional and enlightening experience for our students. God bless our students and their families!

Reflection of Great Lent to Holy Pascha

The Book of Genesis ends with the death of Jacob, and his son, Joseph. When Jacob dies, his sons, including Joseph, weep over him. Following Jacob’s wishes, they carry him to the land of Canaan for the burial. Later in the same chapter, Joseph dies and is buried in Egypt.

It seems strange to us that the Church would prescribed a reading dealing with two deaths for the last day of Lent. A reading proclaiming joys accomplishing the 40 days seems much more appropriate. However the wisdom of the Church is evident. This Saturday is Lazarus Saturday and Christ will weep over a death of his friend, then raise him from the tomb. Soon Jesus will enter Jerusalem, be crucified, die and resurrect.

The Church asks us to ponder the connection between this last day of Lent and the victories of Christ at Lazarus’ tomb and at His own. The deaths of the righteous Jacob and Joseph remind us that death will touch us all. Yet, as believers, we know that St. Paul is right when he writes in 1 Thessalonians chapter 4:13 “We grieve, but not like those who have no hope.”

Our hope and conviction are that Christ has transformed death into a way to the Kingdom of His Father. His Resurrection has swallowed death and made it important. His victory has been bestowed to us. In being faithful to Him, which Lent has taught us to do, we will be with Jacob and Joseph in His everlasting Kingdom. Wishing everyone a blessed Holy Week and a blessed Pascha (Easter)!

Foundation Maths Excursion to Puffing Billy - student reflection

The Year 10 VCE Foundation Mathematics course is a hands-on, life skills based program with an emphasis on practical maths relating to everyday life.

In our first topic we have been studying the Mathematics associated with “Travelling”. To complement the work undertaken in the classroom an excursion was organised to Puffing Billy.

We travelled from Belgrave to Lakeside on Puffing Billy. It enabled us to see what it was like to travel 100 years ago. The steam train travelled through the picturesque forest and fern gullies of the Dandenong Ranges. It was enjoyable and we were able to relax and enjoy the view. We had lunch and explored the area before our return back to School. It was an enjoyable experience.

There are debaters walking around with tired eyes, but they are smiling from ear to ear due to their success at their first debate.

Four out of our five teams won, and all by quite a margin too! The team that didn’t win lost by only two points. A huge effort was put in by all the students, and they’ve reaped the reward! Read more.

Physics Day At Luna Park

On Tuesday March 6, our Units 3 & 4 Physics students attended the Physics Activity Day at Luna Park.

The excursion was related to the Unit 3 topic of Motion, and allowed students to feel first-hand the physics motion concepts covered in the classroom.

The students experienced rides that demonstrated the concepts of circular motion, apparent weightlessness and Newton’s Laws of Motion. So as they enjoyed their time at Luna Park, they reflected on the fact that the rides are based on, and illustrate, some very fundamental principles of physics!
