Music

It has been a busy few weeks for students in the music department

Music Camp

79 students attended music camp from Thursday 23rd to 25th April at Don Bosco Camp in Dromana. The weekend involved rehearsals for school groups and evening activities including groups singing 'Songs to Melt Mr Key's Heart' as part of scavenger hunt.

Generations in Jazz is a yearly national jazz competition in Mt Gambier. Last weekend 34 students in Stage Band and A Capella Choir attended to compete, representing JMSS for the first time. JMSS' groups performed very well, with the stage band receiving an Honorable Mention in their division. Even more significantly, the event supports striving for personal best as individuals and groups and having a great time playing jazz. JMSS students delivered on both counts over the weekend. Congratulations to Mr Delves and Ms Sifris for preparing both groups and to all students involved.

Open Night

Following on from the success of Mt Gambier, Stage Band, A Capella Choir and the full School Choir performed at JMSS Open Night. School Choir sounding full and resonant in the large acoustic of Robert Blackwood hall and the smaller choir, overcoming technical difficulties with a backing track, performed an unaccompanied version of the set piece from Generations in Jazz for the first time.

Small Pop-Up Groups of musicians will be playing at Science Exhibition Night next Tuesday featuring some of the chamber groups involved in the Music Department.

Autumn Soiree

Students from all the music groups will be showcasing their work over the semester at the Autumn Soiree (date to be confirmed) at JMSS on the ground floor.

Generations in Jazz

On 1st May the JMSS Stage Band and A Cappella group took a 7-hour bus journey to Mount Gambier to compete in the annual Generations In Jazz competition. Generations In Jazz is the largest competition of its type in Australia with over 3700 participants from 80 schools from around Australia, including over 180 separate groups. Throughout the weekend the students also attended workshops and concerts featuring the Idea of North, James Morrison’s Hot Horn Happening, and the incredible vocal group Take 6 from America.

The JMSS A Cappella group competed in Division 3 early on Saturday morning (supported by the JMSS Cheer Squad featuring the Stage Band) and put on a great performance with only a few weeks of work. The JMSS Stage Band performed later in the day in Division 4, which featured over 20 different groups. The Stage Band’s hard work throughout the year, including weekly rehearsals and master-classes, really paid off as they achieved 5th place and an ‘Honorable Mention’ in their division, a fantastic result for their first year at the Generations In Jazz competition.

After more performances on Sunday afternoon featuring James Morison, the Generations In Jazz superbands, the Idea Of North, Take 6, and the Future Finalists, the students boarded the bus again for the return 7-hour trip to Monash arriving late on Sunday Night. All the students represented JMSS to the highest degree and demonstrated that JMSS is not just a leading Science School but also a fierce competitor in Music. We look forward to our return next year, bigger and better!
