Exam Preparation
As we reach the end of Week 4 it is a good time to reflect on progress to date and set achievable targets for the next month. The next four weeks have a heavy workload at all year levels and it is essential to seek a balance between students’ study time, recreation time and wellbeing time. With the impending exam period and end of semester assessments it is even more important to ensure that all students are organised, use their diaries effectively and approach each task in each subject they study equally and with enthusiasm. Occasionally a task will cause a student to reach an impasse, and this is where strategies need to be developed to cope with the situation. Spending more time on a task often at the expense of another task is poor practice and can create a domino effect. If a student does miss a class due to another activity such as an International trip, camps or excursions, it is their responsibility to catch up work missed. All subjects have sites which are full of resources where all work set is archived and all JMSS students have access to this.
At John Monash Science School we have a very strong support network that can assist both parents and students improve the quality of time spent on a task with a range of techniques, such as creating an effective study timetable or developing a toolkit of strategies to increase resilience. It is always good to be proactive so please contact a House leader or Principal class member if you want to follow up on any of the points made here.
The exam period at JMSS begins for both Year 10 and 11 in Week 8 of Term 2. This is just over 3 weeks away so all students should be compiling revision folders and getting ready for this period. All students doing a Year 12 subject have to complete the GAT (General Achievement Test) on Wednesday 11th June. All JMSS students will receive an exam timetable shortly. This year the exam week for Years 10 and 11 will be a SAC week for Year 12’s.
Monash Scholars Award
It is pleasing to announce that 3 of our Year 10 students are recipients of Monash Scholars Awards.
These students Una Budimir, George Jose, and Yi Jie Neo will access a program that helps them excel, both academically and personally. Scholars explore and pinpoint their passions, develop a broad suite of study skills, and gain the confidence to make great course and career choices. Through the program, they'll build a personal network of peers and academics that will last through to university and beyond.
These students were nominated by our teachers in an extensive process over Term 1. Congratulations George, Una and Yi Jie.
John Monash Essay
All of our Year 10 students had the opportunity to submit an essay about aspects of the life of Sir John Monash as the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli is commemorated in 2015. The essay was part of a competition co-organised by the RSL and Rotary Club of Glen Waverley. The quality of these essays was very high and 11 students were selected to participate in a special guided tour of the Shrine of Remembrance that focussed on some of the military achievements of John Monash. The students participating in this tour were Anthony Hall, Dylan Sanusi- Goh, Simran Monga, Avestina Zhong, Chantelle D’Cruze, Jessica Woolley, Emily Qiao, Haresh Purushothaman, Laurene Colin, Fiona Zhang and Emily Teh.
One JMSS student has been selected to participate in a special ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra on 3rd June this year based on the essay that was completed by Year 10 students. Congratulations to Simran Monga who will represent JMSS at this ceremony in Canberra.
