ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORT

Mrs Julie Andrews, Mr Paul Dawson &

Mr Bradley Headlam

Assistant Principals

Mobile Phones

This is the final reminder that in 2020 mobile phones are not to be used by students throughout the school day. It is important that as parents, you have a discussion with your children to be clear on the arrangements. This may include decisions on whether or not a phone is brought to school by your children. In the event that your child will bring a mobile phone to school they will be provided with the same lock and locker as all other students. The risk in bringing them to the school still remains with the student. All year levels will communicate this process to the students again at the start of the year restating what has been said in the last few assemblies, so good luck with your conversations!

The 2020 Mobile Phone Policy is available on the school website

Subject Changes

We have now finalised our subjects and timetables for 2020. Each year we find that there are some conversations over the holidays centred around student pathways and thoughts and ideas can change somewhat. If this occurs and your child would like to change a subject based on their pathway then please note that Mr Headlam will be contactable via email to discuss options from Wednesday, 15 January (can’t wait, please email before and he will get back to you after the 15th). He will also be able to meet at school from Tuesday, 24 January, 2020.

STUDENT ROAMING REPORTERS

Students Chloe Diwell and Hayley Gill roamed the school yard following the Grade 6 Orientation Program and recorded the perspectives of staff in response to what their highlights were of the last two weeks:

Ms Ladson: “STEM week, having fun in the end of year classes.”

Ms Fagan: “ I love activities week - spending time with kids without having to teach them maths.”

Ms Eales: “Getting to meet the new Year 7 students and having some fun in our science classes.”

Mr Adamou: “The orientation, the activities and the support from the students.”

Mr Mills: “Activities with the students.”

Mr Grozdanovski: “Spending time, doing things with Year 7, 8 and 9 students on activities.”

Ms Verescuk: “STEM project with 8D.”

Ms Tylinski: “STEM project, activities with students.”

Mr Walker: “Doing heaps of fun stuff with the students and seeing them shine.”

Personal growth of one of our student leaders:

Chloe also spent some time between jobs, chatting with the Principals and reflected positively on her opportunity to contribute to the End of Year School Program:

“This college has done a lot for me and I have decided it was time that I stopped...and actually help the college become a better place. How I talk and act makes an impact on who I am. Doing things in better ways than I was doing earlier has helped my mood change towards how I learn at school (and) the way I speak.”

The student leaders not only helped with running numerous programs for orientation, they cleaned, removed rubbish and contributed positively to our college in numerous ways but showed fantastic growth in their personal development.

Well done to all students and thank you!

Immunisations

A reminder to families who were not able to attend the recent immunisation day that Barwon Health will administer immunisations from their centres or you can attend a local doctor. Please check the attached table of information.

STEM Year 8

Last week the Year 8 classes completed a five-day STEM challenge to design and build a theme park ride with recycled materials and craft supplies. We were amazed at the final creations given that, at the beginning of the week, there seemed to be confusion and uncertainty. Each Home Group presented a cohesive theme park of various rides (ferris wheel, swing ride, roller coaster, carousel, etc) and other interesting elements, e.g. stalls for fairy floss or show bags, ticket booths, toilets, rest areas and a photo booth.  Scientific problem solving was at the centre of these creations, clearly highlighted by the heights of towers, the lengths of functioning roller coasters and the pendulum swing of viking boat rides. A couple of new rides used the ideas of centrifugal force and spirals.

Congratulations to 8F who were declared the winning Home Group, just in front of 8C and 8A came third.

Thank you to staff, students and families for making 2019 a great year.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy summer holiday.
