Grade 5 Experience Days

Woodlands Primary School visit- August 8

The transition team at EMC have been working incredibly hard of the past few years to integrate into our local primary schools a transition program that best fits our communities needs and wants.

We have come up with the idea hosting “Grade five Experiences days” that incorporate the Langwarrin grade five students from all three local primary schools, Woodland, Langwarrin, and Langwarrin Park Primary coming over to the College and spending the day so they can begin to understand and get a feel for EMC and secondary school life in general.

So, on Tuesday 8th of August we had our first “grade five experience day” with Woodlands primary school.  121 students and six teachers came over for a day filled with many different secondary school experiences. EMC offered on a rotational basis experience in Woodtech, Art, PE, and the cohort favourite Science.  Who knew an experiment making “elephant toothpaste” could be so engaging, funny and mind blowing…... yet so educational for our Grade five guests.

As we are known to have some of the “Greatest” PE teachers in the world, PE with Mr Booth was “NEXT LEVEL” we were told!  Not only did students get to run around and play some amazing games we also spoke about the theory side of PE in secondary school, how the body works and how we fuel our bodies for optimal performance. Students’ minds were open to so many different types of sports, the programs that EMC offer and the large amounts of extra sports teams we have available for students to participate in!

Technology was the final experience the grade fives had learning about the difference in ART EMC has to offer and got to experience a class of wood tech.  This experience we unique, as most students had never stepped foot into a Wood tech room, nor used a hammer.  Under guidance from Mr Sibly and Mr Hall students were able to create their own boats, walking around the woodtech area we had replicas of Sailing boats, tugboats, small shipping containers and even a titanic replica!!!!!

We hope by engaging with students from our local primary schools, the relationships and experiences will allow them to have a smooth transition into full time secondary school life!

We look forward to welcoming Langwarrin Primary School and Langwarrin Park Primary School later in the term.

On Tuesday 8 August the Woodlands Primary School Grade  5’s came to our school to taste what secondary school life is like. It was a fun experience for both the students at EMC and the Woodlands year 5 students.

In the assembly they came in a quiet and polite manner, Miss Honey was up the front of the auditorium explaining the day making sure they all understood to the best of their ability. In the science class, they learned about the different areas of science. They saw a demonstration of elephant toothpaste and some optical illusions relating to psychology.

We then helped them complete a small practical seeing who could stack the cups the highest. They were very enthusiastic and loved the experience! After science, they went to Art with Miss Sola. She explained the task well and went through every step, and was kind, and patient. The kids make icy pole stick fences and got to draw graphic artwhich meant they were free to draw what they want.

After lunch the kids had sports. First, we played a game called Ship, Shark, Shore but with different names for each. They all participated and loved it and after that they played a few more games. In the last game they were given 10 small circular plastic mats and they all had to get across the court but weren’t allowed to take their feet off the mat and was made into the competition.

At the end of the day, they did woodwork they made small wooden boats that were able to float, lots of the kids knew what they were doing it was a very relaxing class to end with, and lots of the kids had a very unique sense of what a boat looks like, it was fun to watch.

Overall, it was a good day the year 5’s loved it a lot wanted to come back to experience it again!
