Food Tech

What values does cooking teach?

Cooking is one of a few activities that help improve many abilities at once. Children can enhance their math, science, language, fine motor skills, art, health, and their social skills, by cooking.

Skills and healthy habits children learn by cooking:

  • Exploring their senses.
  • Expanding their tastes.
  • Providing students opportunities to gain a sense of accomplishment.
  • Making healthy choices.
  • Responsibility.
  • Sharing good conversation.
  • Math, science and social skills.

Our cooking team here at EMC have had a wonderful start to Term 3, teaching food skills and introducing the art of cooking to students. During Term 3 in Food Technology, we have enjoyed meeting new students and building new relationships, and using plenty of delicious Autumn produce from our local suppliers to cook with.

Our new group of Year 7’s have already learnt knife skills, how to be safe in the kitchen, measuring ingredients, different cooking methods, and sustainability/food waste. A few of the wonderful things they have made include berry muffins, souvlaki, and tacos.

Our Year 9 Italian Cultural Experience class has produced carbonara, pizza, garlic bread, ricotta cheese and orange & polenta cakes. Yummy!

Here at EMC we run a training Café called Lizzie’s, teaching students the relevant skills and discipline needed to work in the food industry, they gain their Barista certification, and their Food Handlers, giving them the opportunity to work in the food industry outside of school. Our student run Cafe make and sell food and drinks to staff here at EMC. Staff have enjoyed sausage rolls, chilli con carne, soups, pies, fritters, donuts, sweet slices and biscuits, to name but a few!

Stay tuned for our next newsletter where we highlight our student run Café, and our students will be discussing their Café experiences.

We sure love seeing our students try what they have made, and their gorgeous faces full of happiness from making something. It gives them such a valuable sense of achievement and pride.

What can you do to keep your family eating their fruit & veg?

  • Hold a family vegie crunch fest at the dinner table. Chop some celery, carrot, capsicums, cucumber etc, and see who can make the most crunch.
  • Keep serving up vegetables at meals and snacks.
  • Be a role model and let your kids see you eating vegetables.
  • Make fruit and vegetables fun.
  • Go on, make these fruit sticks for dessert tonight 😊

Fun fact:   Did you know…

Bananas are berries, but strawberries aren’t!

On behalf of the EMC Foodies, we wish you health and happiness;

Most importantly-HAPPY BAKING 😊
