Year 10 Religious Education - Biblical Micrography

All students in Religious Education are immersed in a range of prayer forms in order to develop a rich and responsive prayer life, designed to support a personal relationship with Christ. Year 10 have commenced engagement with Biblical Micrography.

Biblical Micrography is a form of prayer that began within the Jewish tradition from approximately the 9th century, to illuminate manuscripts with imagery that reflect the core elements of the passage.

Biblical Micrography has since become a rich form of Christian prayer, where the individual meditates on a specific passage from scripture by contemplating the imagery that it evokes, followed by sketching the imagery that one sees in their mind’s eye.

The individual then repeats the passage again and again by writing it over the pencil lines in order to create a new image formed purely by the words of the passage. Below are some samples from Year 10 after beginning their journey with this prayer form:

Year 11 Studies of Religion

Students from Year 11 Studies of Religion completed their Religious Tradition Study of Judaism with a lesson of sensory revision. Students consolidated their understanding of the observance of Shabbat (sabbath) with key elements such as tasting Challah, lighting candles, study of the Torah and praying the Shabbat Prayer - Kiddush.

Year 12 Studies of Religion

Our thoughts and prayers are with year 12 as they embark on HSC Trial examinations next week. Studies of Religion is on Thursday the 3rd of August. Students will complete questions on the religious landscape of Australia, Aboriginal spirituality, Judaism and Christianity, while 2 Unit students will complete the additional questions on Islam non-Religion and Religion and Peace.

Contemplation Corner

Loving the Leper Within

'God calls all of you to take the path of the inner truth — and that means taking responsibility for everything that's in you: for what pleases you and for what you're ashamed of, for the rich person inside you and for the poor one. Francis of Assisi called this, 'loving the leper within us.' If you learn to love the poor one within you, you'll discover that you have room to have compassion 'outside' too, that there's room in you for others, for those who are different from you, for the least among your brothers and sisters.'

Fr Richard Rohr, Simplicity

Questions for Contemplation:

Where does my path to inner truth lead to?

What am I proud of within?

What do I regret within?

How can I learn to love all of me?

Who is different from me and in need of my love?

BeConnected and Matthew Talbot Hostel

Our six-week BeConnected program resumes this term, with a new set of Year 11 Mentors meeting their ‘mentees’ for the first time this afternoon. The students diagnose different technology-based ‘issues’, and structure a learning program for their partners, helping them to remember how to use their technological devices in the long term. This provides an excellent opportunity for Year 10 and 11 students to interact with seniors and has been invaluable for all involved. Thank you to Mr Dallas Davies who has volunteered to supervise the students involved this term.

Visits to Wooloomooloo also resume this week, with SPX in charge of the Dining Room tea shift at Matthew Talbot Hostel. This gives students the opportunity to serve those who are less fortunate and directly interact with them on a personal level.

Monday Morning Chapel Mass

It was pleasing to recommence our liturgical experiences this week with a morning Communion service held at the Mercy Chapel, hosted by a Year 7 Mercy class, due to the the unavailability of Fr Joey. Nonetheless, we were grateful for the opportunity to share the liturgy and look forward to next week’s morning Mass held in our school chapel.
