Hello to our Scotsburn family, and welcome to another big week at the campus! We continue to have lots happening around the place and it has been amazing to see all students engage in each opportunity with such enthusiasm.

Please remember to have a good read of all items in the newsletter, as well as Compass updates, so that you stay fully informed as well as be prepared for any upcoming excursions and events.

Bunjil Award Winners and Kindness Raffle

A huge congratulations to our first Bunjil Award Winners for Term 3. You have all demonstrated wonderful examples of our school values of Respectful, Responsible and Kind. Keep up the great work!

Our Kindness Raffle is also going gangbusters and is always a highlight at our assemblies. There have been lots of raffle tickets entered into the draw for acts of kindness noticed around the campus, with winners receiving their choice of a hot chocolate or toastie!

Have you shown Kindness today?

Parent Volunteering and Assistance

A big thank you to all the parents that we have chatted to over the past few weeks regarding volunteering opportunities around the campus. We are constantly overwhelmed with the support that we receive and could do the things that we do without such strong community support.

Today your child should bring home a note in their bag that outlines the volunteering opportunities available around the campus. This note also details what each opportunity looks like, as well as a section for parents to indicate which activities they would like to help out with. Parents can tick as many or as few as they like. Once all forms have been returned to classroom teachers, we will create a schedule/roster to send out to everyone. Alternatively, you can email Jarrod at jarrod.morgan@education.vic.gov.au with your volunteering preferences.

A reminder that all parents volunteering require a Working With Children’s Check before commencing any assistance.

Thanks in advance!

DISCO!

It was wonderful to see so many smiling Scotsburn students at the disco on Friday! Everyone was getting their groove on and having a great time. A special mention to Mrs Morgan and the VSSS dancers, who after a long day of practice in Melbourne, put on two performances for the crowd. Well done to everyone involved!

Whole School Assembly this Friday

This Friday we have our next whole school assembly at Buninyong. We will again have our routine of meeting in the courtyard at 8:45am and putting our bags in the kitchen, then walking down together to the gym for assembly. At the conclusion of the assembly, we will have some time to use the gym and the library. Please remember your child’s library books if they would like to return and borrow a new one.

We will bus back up to Scotsburn at recess, to hold Family Groups and finish the day at Scotsburn. Any questions, please see your classroom teacher.

100 Days of School

The smiles on all their faces paint a picture of all the fun we had last Thursday, celebrating 100 days of school. We made a lolly ice cream cake, where we counted out 100 lollies, and looked at all the different ways we could represent the number 100! A highlight was creating a funny portrait that aged all the students, and then coming up with things we would do if we were 100. I hope everyone had a chance to look at these with their child. It was great to see students dressing up and embracing the celebration. Thank you parents for all the effort and enthusiasm that you provided around the special day.

SC1 Buninyong Community Walk

On Friday 4th August, students in SC1 will participate in a Community Walk around the township of Buninyong to see some of the heritage plaques as part of our ‘Then & Now’ integrated topic this term. We will be leaving after assembly and will return after recess. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

Who would think learning could be so much fun! Last week we continued writing our non-fiction texts. We are getting so close now to publishing and looking at all the hard work that has been put into researching and drafting. We look forward to sharing these with you soon. We have started using the i-Pads regularly now in the classroom to read digital texts and research our non-fiction texts. It has been great to see all the students being responsible and using technology to enhance their learning.

In Maths, we have started learning about division, or a ‘fair share’. We will spend the next couple of weeks looking at division and showing ways that model sharing as well as grouping into equal sets to solve problems.

If you have a deck of cards at home, we have learnt a new addition card game ‘U win’ as part of our daily automaticity. I am sure your child would love to share some of the great games we play at school to increase our number fluency.

Please remember to send in a drink bottle full of water each day with your child. Although it is cold outside, we still get thirsty with all our busy work in the classroom.

Have a great week.

Thanks,

Ana and Kirsty.

SC2 Learning Snapshot

What a brilliant day we had at Buninyong yesterday for our Cultural Day. The students had the opportunity to participate in a range of opportunities and activities, including listening to a guest speaker, making damper, and heading up to Mount Buninyong. Next week we will include some photos and student reflections from the day.

A big focus for the first three weeks of Term 3 has been on showing the themes of our Respectful Relationship sessions throughout the week in all areas around the campus. Our current theme has been problem solving. Students have been developing and reflecting on many different strategies to solve problems both in the classroom and in the yard. It has been wonderful to see students help each other and use the common language that we are learning through the lessons. Keep an eye out for more information about our upcoming Backpack Challenge on Friday 11th August, both on Compass and in next week’s newsletter.

Enjoy the week,

Mitch

SC3 Learning Snapshot

Last week our little class of authors continued to create the most amazing narrative stories, full of description and imagery. As we have been drafting, we have been working our way through many writing elements and adding them to our stories. Next week, we will begin to finalise our drafting and editing, ready for publishing - how exciting!

In Maths, we rounded out our division unit with a short post test, where students were able to use their Proficiency Scales to identify growth that they achieved. This provided so much pride in the classroom, and it has been wonderful to see students take ownership with their learning.

We have started to build some excitement around our Grade 5/6 Melbourne Camp at the beginning of Term 4, and if you are yet to pay the deposit on Compass, please do before the closing date of next Monday 7th August.

Also next Monday (7th August), SC3 will be heading down to GMHBA Stadium in Geelong to participate in the BioCats excursion. This excursion has a STEM focus, with students participating in lots of hands-on experiences to link both sports and science together. It is always a really fun excursion! Please remember that we start and finish the day at Buninyong for the bus, and it is an earlier start, 8:30am. I will send out another reminder on Compass later in the week.

Have another brilliant week everyone,

Jarrod and Liz

Specialists Update

We have had a busy start to the term in Performing Arts and PE at Scotsburn!

PE

In PE SC1 has been looking at rolling, catching and throwing. Last week students were lucky enough to have an AFL incursion where students learnt a lot about handballing and marking.

SC2 and SC3 have been focusing on net and wall games. Students have been playing a range of modified mini games. By the end of the term students will be playing modified games of tennis.

Performing Arts

SC1 has been learning how to mirror the moves in dances. Students have been focusing on learning a new dance each week. So far we have learnt the Chicken Dance, the Nutbush and the Hokey Pokey.

SC2 and SC3 have been learning a variety of dances. Once students have learnt these dances they have then made them their own by adding, keeping or removing parts of the dance.

Scotsburn Intercampus Travel

At times, Scotsburn students will be transported between campuses in order to attend classes, assemblies, special days and events. On most occasions, transport required through the day will be by bus and occasionally private car for smaller groups of students. Parents may be asked to drop off or collect from the Buninyong campus if sessions are at the beginning or ending of a day.

We will always let you know of any upcoming travel arrangements via our newsletter, Compass, or via phone for smaller, more specific travel arrangements.

If you ever have any questions or concerns regarding intercampus travel, please contact your child’s teacher.
