Dear Families

The creative arts play a significant role in nurturing students’ creative expression, collaboration with others, cultural appreciation, confidence and self-discipline. We are blessed to have a strong music and drama culture at the College that provides many opportunities for students to explore and expand their artistic interests and passions.  The past week has seen a showcase of student talent on display as part of Music and Drama Week. Congratulations to all students involved in the Music Eisteddfod held last weekend and the Winners’ Concert last night; the calibre of performances was indeed impressive. So too, were the soulful and playful performances of our senior students at Monday’s Jazz Night at the Ellington; it was fantastic to see students enjoying themselves performing in front of friends and family in an authentic live venue. Thank you to the Music and Drama teams for making the creative arts accessible for all students throughout the week through Theatre Sports, Homeroom activities and music performances at break time for all to enjoy.

Being mindful of our neighbours

Senior students and parents are reminded to be courteous to and considerate of our neighbours when driving or parking in streets surrounding the College. Recently it has been noted that vehicles are parking in the ‘no parking’ area along St. Johns Woods Boulevard, which creates concern for residents regarding the safety of students and other pedestrians. Students and parents should use the parking or drive-through facilities available on campus.

2023 Census Collection

Every August, the Australian Government conducts the Non-Government School Census data collection. The information provided by schools during the Census is collected by the Department of Education to:

  • ensure the provision of Australian Government funding to schools is properly calculated and appropriately managed.
  • conduct research, statistical analysis and develop school education policy for the Australian Government.
  • meet national and international reporting obligations on school students in Australia.
  • publish and provide information about schools to the public.

Further information regarding the Census can be accessed below and via SEQTA Documents.

Angelico Exhibition 2023

The Angelico Exhibition for is a prestigious annual event on the Catholic Arts calendar. The exhibition provides a broad public forum through which students throughout Western Australia are able to exhibit their dynamic artistic talent. This year Angelico celebrates its 30th Year.

This year John XXIII College has eight students exhibiting work at the Angelico Art Exhibition. The exhibition is open to the public from 7 August until 25 August at the Forrest Centre, 221 St Georges Terrace, Perth.

Congratulations to the following students on their participation in the exhibition:

Year 12

Fading Faith

Oil On Canvas

The subject of my painting is my Nanna. This artwork pictures her seated under the stained glass in her Parish Church. Religion has been a central force throughout her life; my artwork pictures her in quiet contemplation of her devotion to her faith.

Darcy Bowker Douglass

Year 12

Worth Their Weight in Gold

Coloured pencil and gold leaf

My artwork explores the issue of poaching of African elephants. I used gold leaf on the tusk of the elephant to represent the monetary value placed on the ivory by humans and express that the tusk is more valuable to the wellbeing of the animal.

Group entry, Year 8 Art Students

Oliver Billing, Joel North, Shelby Sheridan and Amber Vujcich

Incredible Insects

Coloured Pencil on card

Inspired by the intricate insect drawings of artist Kelly Stanford, students created a coloured pencil drawing on black paper of an insect.

Bella Samson

Year 11

The Suffering in Safety

Oil on canvas

Amena is a local Afghan refugee who has recently moved to Perth after fleeing the sudden control of the Taliban in Afghanistan last year. She moved here in the hopes of finding safety in this country. The background tells Amena's story.

Samantha Gribben

Year 11

Wick in the Candle

Oil on canvas

My artwork depicts my Mother. The split colour of the work represents her life before and after children. My work celebrates the sacrifice parents make, putting a child before all else and the duality of life before and after becoming a parent.

Speak for Faith

Speak for Faith is a public speaking competition that encourages young people to speak on topics that reflect the material studied in their Religion and Life ATAR course while promoting Catholic faith and values. This year Yvie Rigg and Ian Lawrence represented the College in this competition.  We are pleased to announce that Yvie Rigg will progress to the Speak for Faith 2023 finals and will speak on the topic 'The role of women in the Catholic Church.'

Well done to both Yvie and Ian for your inspiring speeches in the heats!

The Competition is jointly organised by the Catenian Catholic Association and Catholic Education Western Australia.

Year 12 ATAR Geography Excursion

On Wednesday, 9 August, Year 12 ATAR Geography students attended an excursion that visited numerous locations across the Perth Metropolitan Area. The purpose of the excursion was to conduct an inquiry into the morphology of Perth and complete fieldwork that complimented their study of the challenges facing the city in the future. Students enjoyed an in-school presentation by two Project Officers from METRONET, a walking guided tour of the Airport Central Train Station, East Perth, the Perth CBD and Yagan Square. Thank you to Mrs Kalo Bell (ADP – Year 10) and Mr Sam Hoskin (University of Notre Dame – Practicum Student) for their assistance on the day.

Carnaby’s Crusader Visit on JTC Day

On John XXIII Day, as part of our Sustainability Stall, we had Dean from the Carnaby’s Crusaders organisation set up his pop-up aviary with a number of Carnaby’s Cockatoos and Western Redtail Cockatoos for the students to meet, learn about and interact with first hand. Dean’s organisation builds and supplies artificial nesting hollows for these threatened and endangered species. They also rescue and rehabilitate birds in need of help. The visit aimed to allow the students to learn about and see first-hand these beautiful creatures that we have been planting trees and shrubs for at the College. Dean was very impressed with the engagement of students on the day.

Facciamo la pizza!

Year 9 students studying Italian had the opportunity to make and share pizza with their peers. Made with authentic base ingredients of Italian ‘Mutti’ sauce, pizza bases and mozzarella cheese. Some students made classic pizzas such as margherita e capricciosa whereas some experimented with non-Italian toppings. A few enjoyed dessert pizzas. Students savoured their pizzas with a typical Italian orange fizzy drink, San Pellegrino aranciata. Making pizzas concludes their topic on ‘mangiare all’italiana fa bene’ and the importance of fresh ingredients; sharing a meal with friends and family were aspects the students could experience today.

Well done to the Year 9 Italian students for their enthusiasm and engagement.

Chantez!

At the beginning of the term, a representative of the French exchange company AFX came to a parents’ information evening to give us details about and have a question-and-answer session on, individual private French residential visits for students that take place in our long summer holidays. Years 9, 10 and 11 French students that may be keen to apply for this wonderful opportunity are encouraged to speak with their French teacher regarding the application process.

On Wednesday, we welcomed the Canadian singer, Etienne.  He has been awarded the Canadian Children’s Artist of the Year award and the Children’s album of the Year award as well as winning prestigious awards for services to languages teaching. Our French students from Years 9 – 12 enjoyed a wonderful morning of singing and performing, being inspired by famous artists and athletes who endorse Etienne’s musical method of learning grammar.  Etienne was able share some intimate stories, clips and memories from his recent world tour. This was Etienne’s second visit to John XXIII College, and we hope to see him again in a future world tour and judging by the enthusiastic singing, dancing and banner waving from students they will be singing the songs in anticipation of a next time.

Merci e bravo to Madame Griffin-Appadoo and Madame Outtrim for your organisation of this incredible event!
