Around The Primary

Dear Families

This week has been all things Music and Drama for our Year 4 students. After makeup trials, costume checks and tech runs, the students are ready to share their 2023 Musical, Little Shop of Horace, written and directed by Mrs Haydon (Primary Music Specialist). The story tells of Boris Horace, who opens Perth’s newest department store Little Shop of Horace. Very quickly, it becomes clear that each department faces challenges, such as competing with online shopping, staff disputes and not enough customers. Will the store ever be able to overcome these challenges?

Preparation for the Musical began in Term One. Ms Cattapan (Primary Drama Specialist) and Mrs Haydon have been working with students during Performing Arts lessons, Music lessons and at before and after school rehearsals. They have been closely supported during these sessions by many staff at the College. So much work has gone into workshopping students' acting and dancing scenes, with great attention to detail, to take their characterisation and routines to performance level.

Many members of the College community are involved in such a production. It is wonderful to have this support, which enables us to provide the experience to the students and bring the production to fruition.

Today’s dress rehearsal was performed to many proud Grandparents and was a great success. The Matinee performance for Primary school students and the evening show for families and friends take place on Monday, 14 August.

Best of luck to all involved in the performances next week.

John XXIII Day

Congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 students for running the Mini-Fete on John XXIII Day.  We are very proud of the effort that was made to make this day such a success. All money raised will go to support the wonderful work of the Jesuit Missions and Mary Ward International.

Solemnity – The Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary

Tuesday, 15 August, is the Solemnity of The Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary. Next week the Community Mass will be held on this day at 8:00am in the Chapel. There will be no Community Mass on Friday, 18 August.

Kind regards

State Library Incursion

Year 5 students attended an incursion from the State Library this week. They learned the differences between primary and secondary sources of information and some critical thinking skills necessary for researching.

Students were guided through a research task by looking at photos and reading written accounts of a tracker to discover interesting facts about him and our Swan River Colony history. They discovered how different sources of information, such as a tombstone, can unlock the history of Western Australia.

School Sports WA Hockey Tournament

Our Hockey team had a great day at the Perth Hockey Stadium for the School Sports WA Hockey Tournament. After demonstrating some very sharp attacking play, scoring at will and not conceding and goals, we finished top of our group and progressed straight into the grand final against Rosalie Primary.   It was a very tight game that ended in a draw, and we shared the silverware!  Well done to all the players.

If you have any queries about anything sport related, please contact me via email: steve.williams@cewa.edu.au
